FM 544, Hwy. 78 Signal Timing Study to Begin in Murphy
The North Central Texas Council of Governments, working with TxDOT and the cities of Wylie, Murphy and Sachse, has commissioned HDR Engineering to conduct a signal timing study for 24 traffic signals along Hwy. 78 and FM 544. The data collection will begin in the spring of 2019 and will conclude in the fall of 2019 with the implementation of signal coordination and timing adjustments scheduled for fall 2019. Drivers may encounter traffic counting devices at various intersections along Hwy. 78 and FM 544 during the first three weeks of the study.
The goal of the traffic signal retiming program is to optimize capacity and help improve traffic flow, especially during rush hour, on Wylie, Murphy and Sachse’s two most congested roads – resulting in reduced traffic delays, reduced air pollutants and improved fuel consumption for drivers.
NCTCOG representatives cautioned that signal timing does not solve all the area’s traffic challenges. Giving priority to traffic flow on the two major thoroughfares may impact wait times of intersecting streets. As the region continues to grow, increased volume on Hwy. 78 and FM 544 may still result in congested roadways during periods of heavy use.
