Statue of Liberty Returns to Murphy for Tax Season
You know it must be tax season when you see a Statue of Liberty waving at the intersection of Murphy Rd. and FM 544.
Andy Deetz is the owner of Liberty Tax Service located in Murphy. He purchased this franchise, along with two other locations in Plano, in Nov. 2017. In Jan. 2019, he bought a fourth franchise which is located in Wylie. Liberty Tax has been in Murphy for seven years.
Regarding why he chose to be a franchise owner and why he chose Liberty Tax over other franchise options, Deetz said, “I wanted to be my own boss after 30 years of working for others. Liberty Tax allows me to work on a seasonal basis and travel in the summer.” The fact that John Hewitt was the CEO at the time Deetz became a franchisee was an important part of this decision. Deetz describes Hewitt as, “The most influential person in tax preparation.” Deetz is a Navy veteran, worked for a defense company, earned an Electrical Engineering degree from Cornell University and an MBA from RPI.
Personal and business taxes are prepared at Liberty Tax. Staff has been trained and certified by Liberty Tax. Some of the staff at this location has worked here five years. Deetz said, “Many repeat customers are comforted to see the same person year after year preparing their taxes.” Experienced tax professionals lead customers through questions that can result in finding deductions the customer didn’t know they should receive. Deetz said, “We are schooled in the complexities of the new tax laws. We have the full support of a national organization.”
Liberty Tax is prepared to meet all customers’ needs. They serve people of all income levels. Deetz provides a few reasons people choose to come to Liberty Tax, “Some people aren’t comfortable preparing their taxes. Some need to file taxes for multiple years. Some have moved here from out of state and need to prepare taxes for more than one state. We can do all of it. Our goal is to get the customer the maximum amount of return allowed under the law. We make sure that their taxes are prepared correctly. We remove the intimidation that some customers might feel about doing their own taxes.” In addition to preparing taxes, they can also amend taxes that have already been filed.
Tax season is from Jan. 2 to Apr. 15. At Liberty Tax, they offer the option to file for an extension which gives customers until Oct. 15 to file.
Deetz reports that business has been great so far. In 2018, they prepared 300 tax returns. He said the goal for this year is 400. They hope to grow the business by 10% each year.
Between Apr. 16 and Jan. 1, Liberty Tax is open one day a week or by appointment. They use this time to organize files, call customers to voice appreciation and to answer any questions they might have. Deetz also attends a two week continuing education course. A tax school is offered in the fall.
Deetz said, “Our goal is customers for life. If they return, and if they refer us, we know we’ve done a good job.” Liberty Tax has a referral program where you receive $50 for each new customer you refer who files their tax return at one of their offices. Plus, your friends will get $50 off their in-office tax prep fees.
It costs between $150 and $600 to have taxes prepared at Liberty Tax. They offer a 50% off discount to public service employees. When visiting Liberty Tax for the first time, customers should bring their W-2 form, photo id, social security card, documentation of other income and prior year tax return (if available).
