Plano East Brings Thunder To Cotton Bowl
Since 2016 and the inaugural Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase, Plano East has been a mainstay at the two day, Division-6A tournament. This year's four matchups had Plano East paired against the Lake Highlands Wildcats for a 10am kick off on Saturday morning.
Players and coaches consider it a rare treat to be able to play in a storied stadium like the centerpiece of Fair Park in Dallas, and the energy on the field during warmups reflected that respect. Threatening thunderstorms would eventually be the only thing to dampen the Panther's experience.
After three consecutive punts, the start to the game seemed to predict sloppy and soggy play. But as soon as the rain started to fall in the first quarter, so did the Wildcat defense. Brandon Mallory there w a 25 yard strike to Braylon Henderson to start the scoring 6 minutes into the first quarter. A total of 22 first quarter points were posted by Plano East under a balanced run and passing attack, while the Panther defense continued to force punts out of their opponents and special teams forced an early turnover.
Running back Trey Scott-Jones ran for a total of 158 yards and three touchdowns on the day, but the damage was done by the end of the first half when the Panther trotted into the locker rooms with a 29-0 lead. Quarterback Brandon Mallory threw for 2 touchdowns while totaling 238 passing yards.
Lightning delayed the game at the beginning of the 3rd quarter and eventually had the game called in the fourth with the score standing at 36-0.
