Lady Pirates Advance To Regional Quarterfinals
The Wylie softball team will face off against district foe Denton Guyer after sweeping their opponents in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The area champion Lady Pirates beat Southlake Carroll in the bi-district round and then defeated Belton in the area round. Wylie has not lost a game since starting the playoffs but needed late inning dramatics in both rounds of the playoffs to secure the series.
The Lady Pirates opened the playoffs with a 5-3 win over Southlake Carroll in the best of three series and wrapped up the series win with a thrilling 7-6 win over the Dragons on their home field. In the second game Wylie took a 5-3 lead into the final inning only to watch Carroll reclaim the lead 6-5 on two home runs in the top half of the seventh. The sudden swing of events could have easily led to a collapse from the home team but the Lady Pirates showed their grit and resiliency by finding a way to tie the score and eventually win the game when sophomore Skyler Shaw stole home on a passed ball.
In the area round of the playoffs Wylie faced off against Belton in a three game series that was played at Glen Rose High School. In the first game Wylie jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning when senior Alexis Perry scored senior Ashling Shahan on a two run home run. The Lady Pirates added four runs in the third and five runs in the fifth to take the game one 11-0. Junior Annie Gunther notched the win in the circle for the Lady Pirates and Ashling Shahan, Isabella Dayton, Alexis Perry, Rylen Wiggins and Annie Gunther all had multiple hits in the game. Much like the first round of the playoffs the second win would require the Lady Pirates to overcome diversity late in the game to secure the series.
Game two was much different than the first with Belton answering Wylie every time they took the lead. Wylie scored two runs in the first but the Tigers tied the score in the bottom of the second 2-2. Junior Isabella Dayton started the rally for Wylie in the top of the third reaching on a single and the Lady Pirates took the lead 4-2 with Dayton and Sophomore Rylan Wiggins scoring in the inning. Belton again tied the game in the bottom of the third with two runs making the score 4-4. Senior Brittanie Henry scored for Wylie in the fourth and Skyler Shaw scored in the fifth inning to give Wylie a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Belton's bats got hot in the seventh as they tied the game and had the winning run third base. A strong defensive play at shortstop by Wiggins and a huge strikeout by Wylie pitcher Gunther kept the run from scoring and sent the game into extra innings. The Lady Pirates exploded for five runs in the eight including a clutch two RBI hit from Perry to win the game 11-6 and claim the area championship. Annie Gunther recorded the win in the circle for the Lady Pirates, her fourth in the playoffs. Wylie head coach Heather Damron stated " I can't be more proud of this team. Our defensive was phenomenal and we found ways to scratch runs across." When asked about the teams ability to step up when faced with adversity Damron said "Our district this year prepared us for these types of games. When we get down we continue to fight." Wylie will now face Denton Guyer in the Regional Quarterfinals. Details on the date and location will be posted on our social media once they are available.
