WHS Theatre Receives 11 Nominations for ‘Footloose’
By Julia Admundson, WHS student and cast member
In January, the students of the Wylie High School Theatre Department stole the show with their production of “Footloose the Musical,” under the direction of Murphy resident, Polly Harrison. Months later, these young adults are still being recognized for their hard work and commitment. Wylie Theatre has been nominated for a total of eleven out of the fifteen achievements of the Schmidt and Jones High School Musical Awards, one of the most prestigious events honoring live high school theatre in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Wylie ties with Pearce and Rowlett for the high schools with the highest amount of nominations. The Schmidt and Jones Awards honoring excellence in high school musical theatre is sponsored by Lyric Stage, Dallas County’s only locally produced professional musical theatre company.
The cast and crew of “Footloose” were nominated in the following categories: excellence in scenic design, excellence in lighting design, excellence in choreography, best orchestra, best ensemble, best male ensemble performer, best female ensemble performer, best actress for a minor role, best actor in a supporting role, best actress in a supporting role and best musical.
When asked how they felt when they found out about the award nominations, cast members had numerous positive reactions. One student answered saying, “I was in disbelief. ‘Footloose’ was an amazing experience as is, but being able to perform one more time is the icing on the cake.” Another commented, “I mean, I was surprised… we got way more awards than I expected, and I felt super happy that people loved the show we all worked so hard on.”
The Wylie High School Theatre Department has received nominations in past years (winning best scenic design for “Peter Pan” last year), but this is their first time to receive a nomination for best musical, giving the cast one more opportunity to be onstage as a part of the “Footloose” family. At the ceremony, they will perform a medley of songs from their show for the judges, their family and friends and the attending students from other nominated schools. To make the night even more memorable, the ceremony will be taking place at the Majestic Theatre, one of the most historic theatre in Dallas.
The cast and crew of “Footloose the Musical” are proud to be invited to such an elite event, and to be nominated for so many awards. Despite the obvious desire to take home as many awards as possible, each performer knows no matter the outcome of the night, they will leave the Majestic Theatre with unforgettable memories, and have already been awarded one final night to cut footloose!
