Lady Pirates Make History Advancing To Regional Semifinals
For the first time in Wylie softball history the Lady Pirates are headed to the fourth round of the playoffs after a thrilling come from behind win in extra innings over Denton Guyer. Wylie had already faced the Wildcats from Guyer twice this season losing both games during the regular season to their district foe. Playing at Denton Braswell High School on May 11th in a one game playoff at the Regional Quarterfinals Wylie was victorious 5-4 in nine innings, winning in walk-off fashion.
Wylie took the early lead over Guyer scoring one run in the first when senior Ashling Shahan scored on an RBI double by senior Alexis Perry. The Lady Pirates extended their lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore Brittanie Henry reached base on a single and scored on an RBI single by Ashling Shahan . Denton Guyer responded in the third inning scoring two runs to tie the game 2-2. The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fifth when Wylie reclaimed the lead. Alexis Perry started the rally in the fifth with her second double of the day and sophomore Chloe Gilbreath came in to pinch run for Perry. Freshman Averie Gunther plated Gilbreath giving Wylie the 3-2 lead headed into the sixth. Down to their last three outs, the Wildcats mounted a rally to tie the game 3-3 but were unable to take the lead after an amazing defensive play gunned down the runner at home. The game headed into extra innings with neither team able to score in the eighth. Denton Guyer grabbed the momentum in the top of the ninth scoring one run for a 4-3 lead and needed only three outs to send Wylie home for the season. Wylie found themselves in a familiar position needing late inning heroics and were ready for the challenge once again. Sophomore Rylen Wiggins started the rally for Wylie in the bottom of the ninth with a double to put the tying run in scoring position. Sophomore Skyler Shaw followed with a hard hit ball up the middle that the Wildcat defense was unable to handle scoring Shaw and putting the winning run in scoring position. Averie Gunther stepped up to the plate and crushed the pitch to the wall scoring Shaw to give the Lady Pirates the 5-4 win and Regional Quarterfinal Championship.
Junior Annie Gunther recorded the win for Wylie in the circle once again, improving her record in the playoffs to 5-0. Annie Gunther was supported in the field with outstanding defense, especially from shortstop Wiggins and an outfield that gunned down two runners at home. Wylie softball head coach Heather Damron stated "This was a total team effort. The entire defense played great and the outfield came up with two huge outs at home." When asked about the offense Damron praised the teams performance "We had 5 doubles and 10 total hits. It wasn't like were hitting them all to the wall. We scratched, bunted runners over when needed and manufactured runs. Averie (Gunther) came through twice tonight, talk about a great time for a freshman to play out of her shoes" Wylie will now head into new territory for the program as they take on Keller in the Regional Semifinals. Details on the day, time and location for the next round will be updated once the information is available.
