Wylie High Art Students Paint Murals for Prom
36 Wylie High School students, who are members of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS), painted nine murals which will be displayed at prom. The theme of prom this year is Around the World. NAHS sponsor, Susan West said, “We are a chapter of the National Art Education Association. The chapter is composed of students (in) grades nine - twelve. To be in the organization, one must volunteer 15 service hours and maintain at least a B average overall subjects.”
Each mural measures eight foot by five foot. After sketching the design on the canvas, house paint was used to paint the Eiffel Tower, Great Pyramids, Taj Mahal, Easter Island, Las Vegas, Great Barrier Reef, Great Wall of China, Chichen Itza and a title banner which included the prom theme. All but one canvas was created in a round-robin group effort. The Easter Island canvas was painted solely by Zachary Martinez. Artistic styles represented in the murals are impressionism, realism and graphic art. Each mural has a theme-related hidden image which prom attendees will search for that will make the murals more interactive.
When prom coordinator, Cynthia Patel, first proposed the idea of nine murals, West said, “My first response was ‘no’. The most murals we had done in a year were two.” NAHS president, Trista Palomino said, “I think it came out great. I am impressed that we could whip out nine panels in this short amount of time.” The group worked on the murals for over 700 hours. Sabrina Wong worked the most hours of the group and clocked 52 hours on this project. They started the project in October and finished last month. They painted after school either one or two days a week as well as an all-day paint day on a Saturday. Martinez said that a very important element of the project was the social aspect.
Regarding benefits that NAHS members receive, West said, “It gives a sense of belonging for people with artistic skills. It allows them to see how they can use their skills in the community. It also promotes keeping good grades since they each have to maintain a B average. We can become narcissistic if not prompted to help others. This group encourages them to stop and think about other people.”
