Gymnast Strikes Gold at Texas State Championships
Murphy resident Katelyn Gesell, a sixth grader at Murphy Middle School, recently won the State Champion title on Uneven Bars for Xcel Platinum Gymnastics. She has been training for six years at Texas Champion Gymnastics in Plano and has dreamed of winning this honor since her first year. The state meet was held in San Antonio, and Katelyn qualified to move on to the Region Three championships in May which is comprised of the top gymnasts from seven states including Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. At the state meet, Katelyn also earned the silver medal on floor, the bronze medal on vault, and the silver medal for her All Around score. Currently, she holds the highest All Around score in the nation for the 2018 competition season, which puts her as a top contender for the Regional Championship meet.
All 10 of her Texas Champion Gymnastics teammates also qualified for Regionals, and they brought home 7 individual event gold medals and 3 All Around gold medals. This team holds the highest All Around score in the nation as well, and brought home the second place team banner from state.
