Ben Cooper purchased the Fantastic Sams franchise in Murphy (170 E. FM 544) in April of this year. He said the company, in which he had worked for 12 years as an investment operations manager, had been purchased and he was offered a severance package. He was looking for ways to invest his severance package and researched many franchise options. He saw that Fantastic Sams was in the process of reinventing their brand and recognized it as a franchise with a lot of potential. Part of the rebranding process has been spotlighting the fact that Fantastic Sams is a full service salon at affordable prices. He said that no other similar franchise offers all the services that Fantastic Sams does. He also chose this option because it is a service industry which means it does not hold the risk of Amazon or Apple wiping out the industry. Additionally, he likes the creativity of the people in this industry. He said, “I can relate to them.”
Since purchasing this franchise, Cooper has become active with the Chamber of Commerce in Murphy, Wylie and Sachse as well as participating in community and school events. He said that franchise ownership is radically different from the corporate world he was accustomed to. He feels a sense of fulfillment that he didn’t feel before. Fantastic Sams in Murphy wants to be a business that serves the community. Cooper is currently researching the requirements of becoming a Locks of Love salon. He also hopes to become involved in St. Baldrick’s fundraising events.
He recognizes that each guest that enters Fantastic Sams has a story. He likes being present at the salon and introducing himself to the guests. He also likes making follow-up calls after guests’ appointments to see how they enjoyed their visit. He wants each guest to know he cares.
There are currently five stylists at this location. The salon manager has been in this industry for 30 years. One of the stylists has been at this location for 12 years and has many regular guests. All full-time stylists are Toni & Guy (TIGI) Master Colorists. The Fantastic Sams corporate training facility offers weekly free classes which the stylists here attend in order to stay current in the latest trends. Cooper describes this industry as very personal. “The people who work here are really good in this industry. They have a passion for what they do and they are always improving their skills.” They realize how the guest feels when they leave determines when they will return. They only use Toni & Guy products during appointments which are available for purchase. (Other product lines are available to purchase as well.)
Top reasons guests visit Fantastic Sams in Murphy are for cuts, color and style. Cooper adds, “People come here to get professional salon services at a reasonable price. The staff is very friendly. The overall experience is why people come here.” In addition to haircuts ($17 - $22 for adults, $13.95 for children ages 10 and under) they offer shampoo/blowdry ($24.95), up-dos ($45) and a variety of color options starting with highlights for $39.95. They have a Ladies Day Special on Mondays which includes a cut, color and style starting at $69.95
Cooper offers a little history on the origination of the business name, “The owner of a salon was named Sam. Someone said, after Sam cut their hair, “That’s fantastic Sam!”” “In July 1974, Sam Ross opened the first Fantastic Sams® beauty salon in Memphis, Tennessee, with the goal of creating an affordable salon experience that was accessible to everyone.” (Fantasticsams.com)
