Atmos Energy Issues Statement on Gas Line Outages

Murphy Messenger staff requested comment from Atmos Energy today regarding reports of gas line issues experienced in Murphy since last night. The statement from Atmos is the following:

Atmos Energy experienced service issues in an area of Richardson and Murphy yesterday. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers, and we appreciate their patience.

We were in the process of upgrading a pipeline that feeds this growing area.  Construction activities on the pipeline have been delayed due to above average rainfall the last few months. The revised date to return the upgraded pipeline to service was days away when we experienced significantly colder than normal temperatures causing system demands that were greater than anticipated.

Crews are working around the clock to return the upgraded pipeline to service.  Compressed Natural Gas has been brought in to maintain service to five schools in the area. Highly trained service technicians are in the area to re-establish service to any customers affected.

If anyone has appliances or other equipment that are not operating normally, stop using them and call Atmos Energy at 1-866-322-8667.

Everyone should use all of their senses—smell, listen, or look—to check for signs of a leak.  If you ever smell gas or otherwise detect leaking natural gas, leave the area immediately and call 911 and Atmos Energy at 1-866-322-8667.
