Double Turn Lane at Murphy Road and FM544 on the Horizon Additional Improvements Due to Bond Election Approval
“On November 7, 2017, voters in the City of Murphy approved Propositions A, B, and D relating to the issuance of General Obligation debt in the amount of $21,645,000. Proceeds from the issuance of debt will be used to fund projects related to Street Improvements, Public Safety Facilities, and Park and Recreational Facilities.” (murphytx.org).
One of the street improvements will be a double turn lane at Murphy Rd. and FM544. Tim Rogers, City of Murphy Public Services Director said that this is a need in order to provide relief for the current traffic issues on South Murphy Road. An additional turn lane will be constructed next to the right of the existing turn lane. The existing right turn only lane will become a right turn or proceed straight through the intersection lane. The city is currently in the process of selecting a professional service to design the project. Upon selection, the consultant will provide a timeline for construction. The cost for this project is estimated at $175,000. (This project is listed under Proposition A and is called “Right Turn Lane Northbound South Murphy Road @ FM 544.)
Murphy police department will receive a few improvements. Rogers explained that the police lobby remodel will include the addition of an area where officers can meet with citizens as needed. The renovation of the (approximate) 1200 square foot jail space, which is currently being used for storage, will allow an increase in the capacity of the evidence area, expansion of the police locker rooms, and additional office space. The jail space was never used as a jail due to the cost of staffing the area on a full time basis. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year on these projects.
The Murphy Activity Center (MAC) located at 205 N. Murphy Rd. will receive a renovation with the goal of improving functionality. Rogers said, “This may include the addition of meeting rooms and partition walls in order for the large area to be broken into smaller spaces, but still be available for use by large groups.” This needed renovation is due to the fact that currently the MAC is restricted to hosting one class/program at a time. This will enable the recreation department to meet current/future community demands for programs. Rogers informed that the MAC is used for meetings, events and programs ranging from martial arts to the monthly Chamber luncheon. He adds that numerous baby showers, wedding showers and other organizations hold their meetings here. This renovation is currently in the process of selecting a professional service to design the project. Upon selection, the consultant will provide a timeline for construction.
North Hill Park, located at 1302 Rodeo Drive in the Gables/Ranch neighborhood, will receive new construction. Currently there are two playgrounds, large pavilion, grill, sand volleyball court, basketball court, and multi-use field. Phase I of this park was completed in 2007, phase II in 2010. The public is invited to provide input as to what they would like see constructed at this park. Rogers said that a splash ground and additional multi-use field area have been discussed. Public notice will be sent out via press releases, social media, and the city website to let citizens know when the meetings will be held. All of these ideas will then be compiled and discussed between city staff and park board to make final recommendations to city council. Regarding a deadline to submit ideas for the park, Rogers said, “Consideration for recommended appurtenances will continue until the final public outreach meeting has been conducted. We will be setting the dates of the public input meetings at a future park board meeting.”
