WISD Prom Closet Donations Help Teens

WISD Prom Closet Donations Help Teens

For many students, prom is one of the most important events during their high school experience. Prom is a time for teens to have fun with friends while making long-lasting memories, but the cost associated with this exciting night can cause unnecessary stress. For the second consecutive year, Wylie Independent School District’s Prom Closet is dedicated to reducing potential worries for as many students as possible. With community involvement, high school students throughout the district can breathe a much-needed sigh of relief.

Helping is as simple as checking your closet for possible donations before Jan. 31. Requested tax-deductible donations include formal dresses, shoes, jewelry and accessories. Monetary donations are also being accepted to assist with the cost of tuxedo rentals and can be made online at wylieisd.net/promcloset. As the project continues to grow, organizers plan to offer further financial support to pay for prom tickets, hair and makeup, as well as dinner. Partnering with local businesses is also on their wish list.

WISD Family Liaison Specialist Joley Martin said, “We rely strictly on donations to provide a wonderful selection to girls in all junior/women sizes up to 24. In the future, we hope to build more inventory to provide our girls with a better selection of dresses and accessories to go with their dream dress. Anything we can do to make this night special for our students and try to equalize opportunity, despite economic barriers.”

Flyers will be posted on high school campuses beginning Feb. 1. Students who are interested in visiting the WISD Prom Closet simply need to contact their school counselor. Counselors have been given tickets equaling the number of donated dresses the Prom Closet has received. All WISD high school students qualify, and everything is absolutely free. Students will be given a ticket listing the location, date and time of the event. Private dressing rooms with tall mirrors will be available as students select the perfect dress. WISD Prom Closet is accepting donations between 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Wylie ISD Education Service Center located at 951 South Ballard Avenue in Wylie.
