What is a “voluntary” newspaper subscription you might ask?  That means the Murphy Messenger would like to receive subscription revenue from readers who want to help and can. But regardless if you participate or not, you will still continue receiving your free twice-monthly copy of the Murphy Messenger.    

Because the Messenger is different than most community newspapers, our program for voluntary subscriptions is also different. Generally, newspapers that offer voluntary subscriptions ask participating readers to pay a specific annual amount. This could range between $24 and $35 per year depending on the publication.    

Not us! We wouldn’t presume to guess what receiving the Messenger free has meant to our Murphy readers over the past 5 years. We would be honored to accept even a dollar for a voluntary subscription if that’s what a reader was willing to spend to ensure continued service to the community. We are leaving the “amount” you might contribute for a voluntary subscription at your discretion. There is no penalty for readers who do not support us in this way. Many of you support us in other ways – particularly with your patronage of our advertisers which is very important.    

We understand that economic times are tough right now for many of our advertisers and they are cutting their expenses to the bare minimum – nobody understands that better than the Messenger.  When advertiser revenue goes down, our ability to produce the Messenger is placed in jeopardy because we have fixed Printing and Mailing expenses that do not go down proportionately with Advertiser Revenue. Your support of the Murphy Messenger through this Voluntary Subscription program will go a long way to keep the Messenger coming to your mailbox, and every other Murphy resident and business, twice a month for free.

The Murphy Messenger prides itself in containing local content. We were local yesterday, we are local today and we will be local always. Many readers tell us that they read the Messenger cover to cover because they like reading about their city, neighbors and friends. We love that, which is why a handful of staff and volunteers work so hard to bring you the Murphy Messenger twice a month. In addition, our popular on-line Community Forums allow website visitors an opportunity  to discuss a variety of issues and topics important to them and to Murphy at www.murphymessenger.com.
