The Deja Blue Arena in Frisco should be rocking to the cheers of hundreds of Plano citizens tonight as #1 seeded Plano East takes on #2 Plano West for the Varsity Silver section City title.
#1 seeded Plano East played #5 De Soto Grand Prairie Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Varsity Silver division playoffs. After a close first two periods, East pulled away with four goals in the third period to De Soto Grand Prairie's one. There were 44 minutes of penalties handed out during the 36 minute game. More than a third of these penalties were for unsportsmanlike conduct. Despite all the penalties, only three special teams goals were scored and two were shorthanded.
East opened the scoring with two goals within 16 seconds of each other about 5 minutes into the game. The goals were scored in a similar manner though the first was on the power play and the second one was at even strength. At 5:05, Zack Patteson passed the puck from behind the net to Chris Wahler infront of the crease. Wahler one-timed the pass from Patteson through the five hole of the DGSP goalie, Matthew Padgett. Forest Mudgett also assisted on the goal. Sixteen seconds later, Will Young passed from behind the net to Taylor O'Bryon in the low slot. O'Bryon quickly put a shot past Padgett low to Padgett's right side. At 10:23 of the first, Patteson skated in with one defender and put a shot on goal. The puck bounced up in the air and Wahler, trailing on the play, batted the puck into the net for East's third goal. Chris Schultz got the secondary assist on the play.
In the second period, De Soto Grand Prairie started with 48 seconds of power play and scored one second after the power play expired. DSGP forward Jeremy Seiter skated from East goalie Taylor Stobaugh's left to right. Stobaugh attempted to poke the puck away from Seiter, but Seiter was able to control the puck and slip it past Stobaugh. DSGP closed the gap to 3-1 with Seiter's shorthanded goal assisted by Paul Watkins and Keith Crappell. Around the middle of the period, the East defensive coverage broke down leaving DSGP forward Bryan Zientek alone infront of East goalie Stobaugh. When the puck came free to Zientek, Stobaugh took away the lower part of the net and blocked a shot from Zientek to keep the score 3-1. Moments later, Patteson skated in on the DSGP goal, got slashed by DSGP defenseman Sawyer Stinchfield, and appeared to get the puck past the goaltender, but the play was whistled dead before the puck crossed the line. Each team killed off two power plays in the second period and managed only 7 shots between the two of them. DSGP put four on net to East's three shots.
East pulled away in the third with two quick goals about four minutes into the period. At 4:09, the puck was hit deep into the DSGP zone and East forward O'Bryon and DSGP defenseman Brandon Christenson raced halfway down the ice to retrieve the puck. O'Bryon was the first one to the puck and fired a shot from the right faceoff dot that beat DSGP goalie Matthew Padgett and chased him from the game. Padgett played 28 minutes and stopped 9 of the 13 shots he faced. Connor Joyner relieved Padgett in the DSGP goal, but was not given a warm welcome by East. On the next rush, just 18 seconds after O'Bryon's goal, Patteson put a low shot on net that was tipped by East forward Eric Henigsmith as he moved out from behind the DSGP net. The score was now 5-1 with 7:33 to play. DSGP was not finished, however, and scored a shorthanded goal at 5:52 to move the score to 5-2. Michael Dean scored DSGP's second goal from Seiter and Stinchfield. The score stayed 5-2 until the Mobley brothers traded goals and assists. With Patteson in the box for tripping and unsportsmanlike conduct, Andrew Mobley broke into the offensive zone and drew a slashing call just 15 seconds into DSGP's first power play. In the resulting 4-4 play, Andrew Mobley skated in on a break away and beat DSGP goalie Joyner with a back hand shot. James Mobley assisted on Andrew's goal. Andrew would return the favor 97 seconds later. With East shorthanded, Andrew Mobley carried the puck behind the DSGP goal from Joyner's left to his right. Instead of continuing around the boards, Andrew Mobley cut back to the front on the right side of the goal turned and put a shot on DSGP goalie Joyner. The puck came free and lay at Joyner's left knee, and James Mobley pounced on the loose puck and stuffed it into the half-open net for a 7-2 East lead with 1:02 remaining. East finished the period with 8 shots to DSGP's 6.

During the first period of Thursday night's Varsity Silver quarterfinal game, Plano East and Arlington Wild looked well matched for one another. East had the first crack at the power play, and while they were able to set up in the offensive zone and control the puck, they were not able to connect on passes from behind the net to the slot area. East killed their first penalty midway through the first. At 8:44 of the first period, East had their second chance on the power play, but again they came up empty. As the power play was coming to an end and Arlington Wild player Jordan Gnatowsky was leaving the penalty box for the Wild bench, the Wild were caught with six players on the ice and were given a minor penalty for Too Many Players. East went on the power play but would not score in the first period.
The second period began with 46 seconds of power play time for East. It took 39 seconds before Zack Patteson found a loose puck at the left of the crease and put it behind Wild goaltender Jake Jordan for a 1-0 lead. Patteson's goal was assisted by Reid Cleeter and Forest Mudgett. Now that East had removed the lid from the net, the goals poured in. At 3:18 JP Harris scored from the right point to make the score 2-0. Patteson moved the puck from behind the net to Chris Wahler near the right faceoff circle. Wahler's attempted shot was blocked out to the point where Harris found it and fired it past the Wild goalie. At 8:16 of the second period, James Mobley scored after Andy Waldschmidt got the puck to Mudgett who sent a nifty behind the back pass out of the corner to Mobley in the slot. Mobley's goal made the score 3-0. On the ensuing faceoff, Andrew Mobley got the puck from Waldschmidt, drove down the right side of the slot, and beat Wild goalie Jordan with a wrister just six seconds after his brother James' goal. East would add one more goal in the second when Chris Wahler scored from Patteson and Mudgett with 4 seconds remaining in the second. East headed to the third and final period with a 5-0 lead.
The third period was marked by penalties as East took 3 minors for 6 penalty minutes while the Wild were assessed 17 minutes in penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct (10), elbowing (2), and head checking (5). When Patteson was called for tripping at 7:21 with Chris Schultz already in the box for hooking, East found themselves on the short side of a 5-on-3. Then at 8:09, defenseman JP Harris forced a turnover just inside the Wild zone and beat the Wild goalie for a 6-0 lead. East killed off the 5-on-3 and then the rest of Patteson's penalty. In the 10th minute of the third period, East defenseman Cleeter was called for hooking followed by Wild defenseman Nick Duesterhoft for elbowing. During the 4-on-4 play, the Wild kept the puck in the East zone, but they were not able to get many shots on net. The game ended when a Wild player was whistled for head checking with half a second to go. Once again East goaltender Taylor Stobaugh shut out the opposition this time stopping 17 shots. Harris led the offense with his two goals. Patteson and Mudgett each had 3 points: a goal and two assists for Patteson and three assists for Mudgett. East moves on to a semifinal game against fifth seeded De Soto - Grand Prairie. The winner of that game will face off against the winner of Wednesday's game between second seeded Plano West and third seeded Arlington Martin.
East's next game is Tuesday April 10, 8:30 PM at the Frisco Dr. Pepper Star Center.
Top ranked Plano East showed a solid, all-around effort against #16 Keller that resulted in a 7-0 win to open the Varsity Silver division playoffs. From the first face off, East dominated puck possession and created a two goal lead within four minutes of play. Zack Patteson opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 3:13 of the first period. Patteson curled out from the left-wing corner and sent a wrister from the left face-off dot that beat Keller goalie Kyle Kelly high on the glove side. Taylor O'Bryon scored the other two first period goals for East. For the first one, shown at left, East defenseman Chris Schultz sprung O'Bryon for a break away up the middle of the ice. O'Bryon faked to the forehand, pulled it to his backhand and sent a wrister over Kelly's right leg pad at 3:53.
