KEEP MURPHY BEAUTIFUL It's Spring cleaning time!
By City of Murphy | Published  03/25/2009 | Around Town | Unrated

Join the thousands of folks that will be out on Saturday, April 4, 2009, picking up litter. The Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off is an annual event that encourages Texans across the state to join forces to clean up. Volunteers throughout the state remove litter from roadsides, city parks, neighborhoods, and waterways during this annual event. The Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off is the single largest one day cleanup event in the state and serves as Texas’ signature event for the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program. The Trash-Off is part of TxDOT’s litter prevention program, which includes Don’t Mess with Texas, Adopt-a-Highway, and a grassroots partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful. Your participation sends a message to Texans everywhere that the smallest efforts really do make the biggest difference. Take pride in the fact that you were part of making our great state beautiful!

Join in on this event and help make a difference!

Did you know?

More than one-fourth (29 percent) of all litter items are food-related — from fast food items to candy wrapers

Litter can harm animals. They can get caught in plastic six-pack rings or choke on virtually anything not properly contained in a trash receptacle, such as gum or cigarette butts.

You can be fined up to $500 for littering in Texas.

If every litterer in Texas picked up just six pieces of trash every month, our highways would be completely litter-free.

Sign up with the City of Murphy at 972.468.4068 or email Kim Lenoir at klenoir@murphytx.org.  If you're part of an Adopt-a-Highway (AAH) group in Murphy, please contact the City.  Trash bags and safety vests will be provided by TxDOT and may be picked up at Murphy City Hall on Friday, April 3 or Saturday, April 4.

Murphy volunteers may begin Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and will gather at the Maxwell Creek Pavilion (behind Murphy Middle School) between 12 noon and 1:00 p.m. to share experiences and snacks.  We will recognize the group that filled the most trash bags, the most unusual litter item found, the largest item found, and more.  Volunteers are encouraged to clean neighborhood parks, schools, streets, and Maxwell Creek.  Gather your family, friends, scout troops, clubs, and come out for this state-wide Trash-off and to help Keep Murphy Beautiful!
