CITIZEN COMMENTARY

Submitted by: Kornelia Herkenrath
401 Parkshire Drive, Murphy
In response to the previously printed letter of Leon Barbee.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:

In response to Mr. Barbee's letter: Great! I could not agree with you more. When I first read Mr. Otto's letter, I must admit that I was thinking, "What is his problem?" I also intended to respond, but . . .

My husband and I moved to Murphy seven years ago. We love living here but more than that, we like the sense of security. With the police driving through our neighborhood to ensure that it is safe and secure, one always feels like that.

I own a small business and I do quite a bit of driving. Violations as described (in Mr. Otto's letter) are just very visible in cases of younger drivers nowadays. For example, a few days ago there were three cars in line trying to make a left turn towards Wal-Mart (from FM 544) at 4:30 p.m. Sitting there waiting to turn, how could you not possibly see the sign: "No turn between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.?"

Why are insurance payments for young males so much higher than for females – not that they are any better drivers particularly when there is a handful of them in the car. U.S. laws concerning driving – especially teenage driving are very lenient compared to countries e.g. in Europe. Therefore as far as I am concerned – to all the police officers out there: Keep writing those tickets! If we can save only one innocent life, it is worth it.

And my heartfelt thanks to the Murphy Police Department for all they do for us.

Sincerely, Kornelia Herkenrath
