Marina May was searching for something she and her daughter could enjoy doing together. Her daughter enjoys rock climbing, so May elaborated on the rock theme and suggested they paint rocks together. Her daughter did not take to the rock painting idea, however May loves it.
An IT specialist with a degree in applied mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in computer science May adds painting instructor to her list of professions. She teaches rock painting classes to students at an informational private school, workshops to teens and adults at Hobby Lobby and recently to special needs children. Excitedly she expresses surprise over the great success and concentrated detail the special needs child was able to produce and hopes to broaden this area of instruction.
Five years ago May was inspired by painted rocks she saw at art exhibits, and began researching the technique. She tried painting on canvas but found she enjoyed the dimensionality of rocks more. She feels that holding a rock painting is a multi-sensory experience.
She purchases the rocks at a landscape company in Frisco (Custom Stone Supply). Currently she has 200 pounds of hand chosen “canvases” waiting for her in her garage. She uses acrylic paint.
Inspiration for her artwork comes mostly from nature and occasionally from literature.
May also paints custom artwork and offers birthday party packages. For more information contact her at paintingonrocks@yahoo.com.
