Outdoor Warning System test scheduled
By City of Murphy | Published  05/2/2011 | Around Town | Unrated

\"\"Murphy Fire Rescue has scheduled a test of the Outdoor Warning System (OWS) on Wednesday, May 4 at 1 p.m. The test will consist of a brief activation of the sirens throughout Murphy, allowing emergency personnel to verify the system’s functionality. Should inclement weather occur on May 4, the test will be rescheduled. Conducting a test of the OWS during a rain event gives residents an erroneous warning.
The OWS sirens are intended to gain the attention of those who may be outdoors, warning them to seek shelter from a hazard. Once indoors, they should tune to local news sources for the nature and severity of the emergency.
While many homes are within hearing distance of the OWS sirens, residents should depend on a weather radio as the primary source of early warnings of approaching storms.
