Johnny Jones breaks free for a 73 yard touchdown on the first play from scrimage for the Wylie Pirates in a 60-21 blowout of Mesquite Horn on Friday night at E.H. Hanby Stadium. Wylie Defensive Tackle Devan Drake draggs down the Horn Quarterback during one of the six sacks produced by the Wyile defense in a 60-21 Wylie win at E.H. Hanby Stadium on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008. Murphy resident Nikita Whitlock breaks through the line during one of his many trips to the Horn backfield. The Wylie defense was dominating in posting six sacks, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt and two interceptions on the night. Nick Knott is all alone in the secondary on the way to his second rushing touchdown of the night. Wylie scored quick all night with the longest drive taking only 1:59. Logan Lambert easily avoids an arm tackle of the Mesquite Horn Defense. Nikita Whitlock celebrates after blocking a punt deep in Mesquite Horn territory.

PESH FOOTBALL ACTION East vs. Heritage

Plano East came into Friday night's game hoping to end a 2 game losing streak for the season. Facing the 12th ranked Colleyville Heritage Panthers they faced a big challenge. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday night in Colleyville, but was moved to Friday night in Plano due to Hurricane Ike. East took a chance on their first drive with 4th and 1 at their 25 yard line and were stopped for a loss of three yards by Heritage. Heritage then turned that into a short four play drive that gave them a 7-0 lead. East then fumbled on their second drive to give Colleyville the ball at their 24 yard line. This time it took them six plays to score, making it 14-0. Colleyville would finish off their 1st quarter scoring after an interception and two play drive. Heritage would go onto score another three touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, one coming off a 48 yard interception return to make the half time score 42-0. The second half was more of the same as East turned the ball over three more times, twice on interceptions and once on a fumble. East defense was able to get one turnover when Dayvyon Henry intercepted the first pass of the second half. They were also able to slow down Heritages offense after the starting quarterback Steven Hill was pulled after a big hit on their second drive. Heritage was to much though only allowing East to score on their final drive. Rodney Thompson score a 15 yard touchdown with only 15 seconds left. East head coach Johnny Ringo said after the game “Our players kept going but we made to many mistakes to overcome.” He said we are not doing the things necessary to keep up the “tradition of our program.” East continues to have a tough schedule ahead of them as they face Dallas Skyline next week before going into district play. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th FinalPlano East 0 0 0 7 7Colleyville heritage 21 21 14 0 56

PESH Football Opener August 29th

PANTHERS VS JAGUARSBy Eric Green Plano East returns to action after a disappointing finish to last year. Looking to rebound from their first non playoff year in 11 seasons. They open the season facing the Flower Mound Jaguars. The Jaguars took off in the first half, scoring on 4 of their eight drives. East only score of the first half was on their second drive. Toben Opurum scored on a 78 yard run on the second play. Then added two points on a faked point after attempt, where Opurum ran it in. The half finished 24-8 with Flower Mound leading. In the second half the Jaguars continued to hold the Panther offense Not allowing them to score and only allowing two first downs. The Jaguars scored another 16 points and used most of the clock to finish off East. The final score was 40- 8 Flower Mound. After the game East head coach Johnny Ringo said “ the Early touchdown was a good start but the turnover on the next drive hurt us” He felt like dropped ball and maybe some first game jitters hurt them. For next week he believes being more consistent offensively will not put the defense in holes. East takes on Abilene High School on Friday September 5th at Murphy’s Kimbrough Stadium. The game time is 7:30. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th FinalPlano East 8 0 0 0 8Flower Mound 14 10 7 9 40 Photos by Andre Guerin Plano East RB breaks free for a 78 yard touchdown run - the only highlight for the East offense on the night. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Plano East LB Brandon Green tackles Flower Mound's Brad Kapten. Plano East WR Denzelle White leaps for a pass, but comes up short, and the pass falls incomplete.

Plano East Lady Panthers Soccer cannot slay Dragons; finish season as 2nd team in Texas

This past weekend, the Plano East girls' soccer team came very close to being the best 5A girls team in the state. Extremely close. Add up the inches and it would be less than the width of your computer monitor. After dispatching Houston Clear Lake 2-0, East met the Southlake Carroll Lady Dragons in the final. The Lady Panthers seemed to be taking in the sights at the beginning of the game. East seemed to lack its usual energy and were often beaten to loose balls. They could not mount much offensive pressure, though one should keep in mind that they were facing a brisk wind and a stingy Southlake Carroll defense. The Lady Dragons had only given up 9 goals in the preceding 21 games. Southlake Carroll ended the half up 1-0 after defender Leslie Shurtleff placed a low shot just inside East keeper Rachael Stelly's left post. In the second half, Shurtleff scored on a long free kick into the wind that snuck inside the farside, top corner. The two goal deficit got East's attentions, and the game became much more competitive. East senior midfielder Carolyn Polcari used the wind to launch some long attacks on goal. About halfway through the second half, Polcari, bound for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, scored a goal with a well struck free kick from the right of goal. The ball found its way to the small space between Carroll keeper Catilin Schneider's fingertips and the far, upper corner of the goal. Later in the half, Polcari had another free kick; this one from just outside the penalty box. Her shot bounced off the crossbar down to the ground but did not cross the line, and Carroll cleared the ball out of danger. Finally, with a less than a minute left, East played the ball up the right side of Carroll's defense. As the Carroll fans counted out the final seconds, East junior Serena Hines moved the ball up to senior Creeia Nuckols who angled the ball toward Polcari, then to the arc to freshman Rachel Cohenour who found Polcari just shy of the penalty kick spot. Polcari ripped a shot as time expired, but keeper Schneider managed to smother the ball as the horn sounded. Fifteen seconds later, Schneider was mobbed by her ecstatic teammates. Meanwhile the East players could hardly move as they thought about how far they had come this season. This was the first girls' team to make the state tournament, and they set the bar high for future East teams in the state tournament. East will graduate 9 seniors including their starting back line, but there are plenty of talented juniors with the experience of the state finals to help lead this team next season. For now, the Lady Panthers can be happy with being the best ladies' soccer team in school history.

East girls soccer team drains Houston Clear Lake to earn place in State Final

Plano East and their fans were cautiously optimistic going into the second half of the 5A State semi-final game against Houston Clear Lake. East had a 1-0 lead thanks to Serena Hines' early strike, but had missed an opportunity to go up 2-0 when Carolyn Polcari's penalty kick was stopped by the Clear Lake keeper. Early in the second half, Clear Lake was awarded a penalty kick that deflected off the left goal post. From that point East put good pressure on the Clear Lake defense while their own defenders shut down the Clear Lake attack. East finally got some breathing room with less than 5 minutes to play when senior forward Courtney Garner took a throw in, maneuvered past the last line of Clear Lake defenders, broke in on goal, and beat the keeper. East won the game 2-0 and earned a spot in Saturday's championship game. The final will take place at 11 AM at Round Rock ISD Stadium in Austin. East faces another area team in South Lake Carroll.

East outshot in shootout, lose to Allen

The Lady Panthers soccer teams took on Allen Tuesday night at Clark field. The varsity team brought in a 4-1 district record and the goal of beating Allen, the #2 ranked team in the area in the SportsDay poll. Plano East began the game with energy and seemed to possess the ball more in the first half. In the 7th minute, senior forward Courtney Garner raced to a ball that the Allen defenders had left for their keeper. Garner got to the ball just before the Allen goalkeeper who could not fully possess the ball. Garner then put the loose ball into the unguarded net for a 1-0 East lead (see picture). In the second half, Allen seemed to have the upper hand and put pressure on the East defense and keeper. Allen eventually scored to tie the game. Despite some late chances by Plano East, the game went to a shootout. The shootout proved exciting as Allen scored on its first two, and Plano East found themselves needing two scores and a stop to avoid a loss. East keeper Rachael Stelly held up her end of the deal getting just enough of the Allen player's shot to deflect the ball wide of the cage. East juniors Lisa Sliwinski (back from a 5 week absence due to an ankle injury) and Serena Hines scored in their shootout turns to force the sudden death shootout. Hines' goal was particularly exciting as the Allen keeper took some momentum off the shot but was not able to collect the ball before it rolled into the net for a goal. In the first round of sudden death shootout, Allen scored and East missed leaving Allen with an unblemished record for now. East is 4-2 in district halfway through the schedule and will go to Lake Highlands on Friday to open the second half.

Lady Panthers take Lewisville Cup

Plano East women's varsity soccer participated in the Lewisville Cup this past weekend, 24-26 January. The Lady Panthers tied Keller Fossil Ridge 1-1 in their first game then beat host Lewisville 1-0 on Friday afternoon. On a foggy Saturday morning, East jumped on Arlington early and eventually rolled to a 4-0 victory. The win was punctuated with the fourth goal (at left) coming on a header by Ashley Ramos, a Murphy resident, resulting from a rebound of a well placed free kick by Katie Leto, a former Murphy Mustang. The tournament was based on a point system with 6 points given for a win, three for a tie, and extra points for a shutout and per goal up to 3. East got the maximum 10 points in the game against Arlington and needed each of them, winning the tournament by one point. It was a great way to close out the preseason, and now all the team's attention is focused on their first district game to be played Tuesday 29 January against Lake Highlands at Clark East Stadium.

On Thursday, Plano East had the difficult task of defeating #3 state ranked Allen to earn a spot in the playoffs. The Panthers finished the first quarter with a 28-21 lead, but the Allen defense held East to only one more touchdown the rest of the way. Meanwhile Allen put 14 points up each of the last three quarters for a 63 - 35 victory. East quarterback Riko Smalls threw for 401 yards and 5 touchdowns but also 3 interceptions. East receiver Zach Patteson finished with 106 yards on 8 receptions while Toben Opurum garnered 104 yards on two receptions. Opurum also ran for 66 yards while D'Lyle Washington ran for 73 yards. East's loss ends a season that started with great promise but ended with more disappointment.Allen's victory over Plano East Thursday night cleared the way for Wylie to claim a playoff position Friday night. Needing to win at Wildcat - Ram Stadium, Wylie jumped out to a 14 point lead and never looked back. Jerod Monk threw for 153 yards and ran for 67 yards and a touchdown. David Duvall ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Noah Cheshire ran for the other touchdown. Zac Ohannessian kicked two 34 yard field goals including one after Lake Highlands attempted to ice the Wylie kicker with three consecutive timeouts. Wylie's 34-17 victory earned them the fourth playoff spot in district 9-5A.

The Plano East Panthers hosted the Wylie Pirates for East's homecoming, but it was the Pirates who seemed to be at home. Wylie racked up 203 yards rushing and 340 yards in the air and intercepted 3 passes. Despite the three interceptions in the first half, East closed to within a touchdown by halftime. In the third, East tied the game at 21. Then the two teams swapped touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Wylie scored three touchdowns, but had two extra points blocked and a two-point conversion failed. Plano East was able to score two touchdowns, one with a two-point conversion. East's two touchdowns gave them leads of 1 and 3, but Wylie's 3rd touchdown of the 4th quarter put the Pirates up by 3 with only 28 seconds left. It was not enough time for Plano East to drive into field goal territory. Wylie won 39-36.Top performers were Jerod Monk with 25 of 33 for 340 yards and 4 touchdowns, Nick Duvall with 132 yards on 31 rushes and 2 touchdowns, and Dominique Rabun with 173 yards receiving on 7 receptions and 3 touchdowns.

East football comes back for a 2 OT victory

Last week the Panthers had two scores on the board before four minutes of play. This week, they were four and a half minutes into the second quarter before they had any points on the board. In the end it didn't matter, because Plano East found the will to win. Of course, where there's a will, there's a way. After Lake Highlands missed a 38 yard field goal attempt, East opened the scoring with a 27 yard pass from Riko Smalls to Austin Conyers (Chad Powell kick). Lake Highlands answered with a 48 yard Scott Renkes field goal that just made it over the crossbar and inside the left upright. The teams then traded punts, but when Lake Highlands punted, the East punt returner could not handle the ball and Lake Highlands recovered on the East 25 with 1:25 to play in the half. On the next play, Lake Highlands QB Jacob Andrews pitched left to Jake Vines who threw down the left side of the field to Wes Romanowski who trotted into the endzone with a 32 yard touchdown reception (Renkes kick). That put Lake Highlands up 10-7 at the half.In the second half, Lake Highlands was driving toward a score when Tyler Melancon forced a fumble and recovered it. East took the ball down the field and scored first with a 19 yard strike to Kevin Smith at the back of the endzone (Powell kick) to jump ahead 14-10. The Wildcats came right back with a 53 yard run by Alonzo Wilson (Renkes kick) to go back on top, 17-14. In the fourth quarter, things looked bleak when Lake Highlands scored again with 8:45 to play. Lake Highlands RB Desmond Roland ran the ball in from the East 5 (Renkes kick) for a 24-14 lead. But East countered with a strong drive including a 4th and 4 conversion with a pass to Austin Conyers. East got a first down inside the 10 before a bobbled snap put them at the 20. After a couple incomplete passes, East went for the kick and Chad Powell connected on a 37 yard field goal to make the score 24-17 with just under 7 minutes to play. On the next drive East forced a Lake Highlands punt and took over at their 45. Then, with 3:12 to go and needing a quick score, East QB Smalls found Zach Patteson open on the left at the Lake Highlands 30 and he raced into the endzone for the tying score (Powell kick). Lake Highlands was not finished, and they drove into East territory to the 24. The Wildcats attempted a field goal, but the kick was just wide to the right leaving the Panthers a glimmer of hope heading to overtime. In overtime, East scored with a 4 yard pass to Mikey White (Powell kick). Lake Highlands answered with a one yard run from QB Jacob Andrews (Renkes kick). Switching order for the second OT, Lake Highlands WR Antoine Harrison scored on a 27 yard reception, but the snap for the extra point was low, and the kick was blocked. On East's drive Smalls found Kevin Smith over the middle for a touchdonw to tie the score, 37-37. Chad Powell came on to kick the game winning extra point and East escaped with a win to open district play. Next week it's East versus West at Clark Stadium in Plano.Click here for more images from the game (opens a new window).

The Wylie Lady Pirates hosted the 10th ranked Plano Wildcats on 18 September in a district 9-5A matchup. The Lady Pirates played tough the first two games, finishing with 17 and 24 points, but the Wildcats surged to a 25-11 victory in the decisive third game. The loss put the Pirates at 2-2 in district play. After defeating Plano East in a close match (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 20-25, 15-12), Wylie lost at Plano West (8-25, 10-25, 20-25) to achieve a 3-3 district record. This puts Wylie in a tie with Allen for 4th place in their district. The three teams above them are all ranked in the top 10 in the area, so the Pirates have a tough row to hoe. The Lady Pirates take on #2 area ranked Lake Highlands tonight at 7 PM at Lake Highlands to close out the first round of district play. In the second go-round, Wylie will play 5 of 7 matches at the friendly confines of the WHS Gym. So get out and cheer on the Lady Pirates to post-season play.Wylie volleyball schedule

After Plano East's first two offensive plays, one had the feeling the John Tyler defense was in for a long night. First, QB Riko Smalls ran up through the middle of the line, was nearly tackled, and raced 61 yards for a quick East score. On the Panther's next drive, Smalls found WR Mikey White at the one yard line for a 21 yard touchdown pass. The rest of the night did not come quite as easy, but the high-flying East offense put 52 points on the board by the end of the game. Smalls finished 14 of 24 for 297 yards, 6 touchdown passes, and one rushing touchdown. White led the receiver corps in touchdown receptions with 3, and WR Kevin Smith led in yardage with 125 yards on 5 catches including a touchdown reception. RB Toben Opurum and WR Rodney Thompson made the other touchdown catches. The defense was stifling in the first quarter, holding John Tyler to 3-and-out on the first drive and short-circuiting the Lion's second drive when DE Will Young alertly recovered a Tyler fumble. The Lion offense steadily improved throughout the night, inspired by RB Ramonte Hampton who ran for 118 yards and threw for a 24 yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Hampton also ran East's last kickoff back 100 yards for the Lions' final score.Next up for Plano East is the district 9-5A opener against Lake Highlands at Tom Kimbrough Stadium at 7:30 on 28 September.Images from the game (opens new window)

Plano East went to Garland's Williams Stadium to face off against the Garland Owls in a rematch of what was an exciting game in 2006. The first half was quite exciting with momentum swinging fumble recoveries and big plays, and the Panthers developed a 14-7 lead by halftime. The defense kept the Owls at 7 ther rest of the way with good defensive stands including a stop at the East 2 yard line and a safety. The East offense, in particular the receiving corps, put the game out of reach in the 4th quarter with 3 touchdown receptions. The final score was East 40 - Garland 7. QB Riko Smalls led the air attack with 333 yards passing and 3 touchdown passes; one each to Mikey White, Zach Patteson, and Kevin Smith. Smalls also ran a keeper for a one-yard touchdown. Reserve QB Gennaro Annuziatio tacked on a 2 yard TD pass to Patteson to close the scoring. RB Toben Opurum racked up 180 all-purpose yards mostly on screens and short passes with lots of yards after the catch. East moves on to play Tyler's John Tyler at Kimbrough Friday 21 September.Photos from the game are available here (opens a new window).

East Volleyball wins Challenger bracket at Texas Open

The Plano East Lady Panthers Volleyball team finished at the top of the Challenger bracket at the 2007 Texas Open in Allen 24 and 25 August. The Lady Panthers went 6-2 overall. East defeated Coronado and Pearce but lost to Marcus in divisional play, earning a spot in round 1 of the championships. A loss to Duncanville placed them in the Challenger bracket where they won their next 4 games against Creekview, Rowlett, Denton, and Pearce. The Lady Panthers are returning 7 players from last year's Varsity team: Chandler Baker (So. right side hitter), Jamie Simanek (Sr. libero), Samantha Wendling (Jr. outside hitter), Kathryn Rau (Sr. setter), Lauren Carpenter (Sr. outside hitter), Lauren McManus pictured at right (Sr. outside hitter), and Allison Brown (Jr. middle blocker/right side). Coach Marcy Crabtree noted that "this year's team has the most depth of any team I've ever coached." The success at the Texas Open seems to uphold this contention. Although East is off to a good start, the integration of new players is a process that will probably "unfold throughout the season." That may mean the best is yet to come. The Lady Panthers are aiming for a district title: "no easy feat," according to Coach Crabtree. Indeed, East is in district 9-5A with Lake Highlands (16-2), Plano West (10-3), and Allen (13-5), all of whom made it to at least the 3rd round of the Championship bracket. District play has yet to open, and the Lady Panthers are brimming with confidence. It should be an exciting season in 2007.Texas Open tournament results can be viewed here.Check out the Plano East Volleyball website.Pictures from the Rowlett game, round 3 of the Challenger bracket, are here.

#1 seeded Plano East played #5 De Soto Grand Prairie Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Varsity Silver division playoffs. After a close first two periods, East pulled away with four goals in the third period to De Soto Grand Prairie's one. There were 44 minutes of penalties handed out during the 36 minute game. More than a third of these penalties were for unsportsmanlike conduct. Despite all the penalties, only three special teams goals were scored and two were shorthanded.East opened the scoring with two goals within 16 seconds of each other about 5 minutes into the game. The goals were scored in a similar manner though the first was on the power play and the second one was at even strength. At 5:05, Zack Patteson passed the puck from behind the net to Chris Wahler infront of the crease. Wahler one-timed the pass from Patteson through the five hole of the DGSP goalie, Matthew Padgett. Forest Mudgett also assisted on the goal. Sixteen seconds later, Will Young passed from behind the net to Taylor O'Bryon in the low slot. O'Bryon quickly put a shot past Padgett low to Padgett's right side. At 10:23 of the first, Patteson skated in with one defender and put a shot on goal. The puck bounced up in the air and Wahler, trailing on the play, batted the puck into the net for East's third goal. Chris Schultz got the secondary assist on the play.In the second period, De Soto Grand Prairie started with 48 seconds of power play and scored one second after the power play expired. DSGP forward Jeremy Seiter skated from East goalie Taylor Stobaugh's left to right. Stobaugh attempted to poke the puck away from Seiter, but Seiter was able to control the puck and slip it past Stobaugh. DSGP closed the gap to 3-1 with Seiter's shorthanded goal assisted by Paul Watkins and Keith Crappell. Around the middle of the period, the East defensive coverage broke down leaving DSGP forward Bryan Zientek alone infront of East goalie Stobaugh. When the puck came free to Zientek, Stobaugh took away the lower part of the net and blocked a shot from Zientek to keep the score 3-1. Moments later, Patteson skated in on the DSGP goal, got slashed by DSGP defenseman Sawyer Stinchfield, and appeared to get the puck past the goaltender, but the play was whistled dead before the puck crossed the line. Each team killed off two power plays in the second period and managed only 7 shots between the two of them. DSGP put four on net to East's three shots.East pulled away in the third with two quick goals about four minutes into the period. At 4:09, the puck was hit deep into the DSGP zone and East forward O'Bryon and DSGP defenseman Brandon Christenson raced halfway down the ice to retrieve the puck. O'Bryon was the first one to the puck and fired a shot from the right faceoff dot that beat DSGP goalie Matthew Padgett and chased him from the game. Padgett played 28 minutes and stopped 9 of the 13 shots he faced. Connor Joyner relieved Padgett in the DSGP goal, but was not given a warm welcome by East. On the next rush, just 18 seconds after O'Bryon's goal, Patteson put a low shot on net that was tipped by East forward Eric Henigsmith as he moved out from behind the DSGP net. The score was now 5-1 with 7:33 to play. DSGP was not finished, however, and scored a shorthanded goal at 5:52 to move the score to 5-2. Michael Dean scored DSGP's second goal from Seiter and Stinchfield. The score stayed 5-2 until the Mobley brothers traded goals and assists. With Patteson in the box for tripping and unsportsmanlike conduct, Andrew Mobley broke into the offensive zone and drew a slashing call just 15 seconds into DSGP's first power play. In the resulting 4-4 play, Andrew Mobley skated in on a break away and beat DSGP goalie Joyner with a back hand shot. James Mobley assisted on Andrew's goal. Andrew would return the favor 97 seconds later. With East shorthanded, Andrew Mobley carried the puck behind the DSGP goal from Joyner's left to his right. Instead of continuing around the boards, Andrew Mobley cut back to the front on the right side of the goal turned and put a shot on DSGP goalie Joyner. The puck came free and lay at Joyner's left knee, and James Mobley pounced on the loose puck and stuffed it into the half-open net for a 7-2 East lead with 1:02 remaining. East finished the period with 8 shots to DSGP's 6.The 7-2 victory sends East to the City title game against the winner of Plano West and Arlington Martin who will play Wednesday April 11 at Deja Blue Arena. The final game will be Thursday April 12 at 8:30 at Deja Blue arena in Frisco. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.

East hockey headed to semifinals after beating Arlington Wild 6-0

During the first period of Thursday night's Varsity Silver quarterfinal game, Plano East and Arlington Wild looked well matched for one another. East had the first crack at the power play, and while they were able to set up in the offensive zone and control the puck, they were not able to connect on passes from behind the net to the slot area. East killed their first penalty midway through the first. At 8:44 of the first period, East had their second chance on the power play, but again they came up empty. As the power play was coming to an end and Arlington Wild player Jordan Gnatowsky was leaving the penalty box for the Wild bench, the Wild were caught with six players on the ice and were given a minor penalty for Too Many Players. East went on the power play but would not score in the first period. The second period began with 46 seconds of power play time for East. It took 39 seconds before Zack Patteson found a loose puck at the left of the crease and put it behind Wild goaltender Jake Jordan for a 1-0 lead. Patteson's goal was assisted by Reid Cleeter and Forest Mudgett. Now that East had removed the lid from the net, the goals poured in. At 3:18 JP Harris scored from the right point to make the score 2-0. Patteson moved the puck from behind the net to Chris Wahler near the right faceoff circle. Wahler's attempted shot was blocked out to the point where Harris found it and fired it past the Wild goalie. At 8:16 of the second period, James Mobley scored after Andy Waldschmidt got the puck to Mudgett who sent a nifty behind the back pass out of the corner to Mobley in the slot. Mobley's goal made the score 3-0. On the ensuing faceoff, Andrew Mobley got the puck from Waldschmidt, drove down the right side of the slot, and beat Wild goalie Jordan with a wrister just six seconds after his brother James' goal. East would add one more goal in the second when Chris Wahler scored from Patteson and Mudgett with 4 seconds remaining in the second. East headed to the third and final period with a 5-0 lead. The third period was marked by penalties as East took 3 minors for 6 penalty minutes while the Wild were assessed 17 minutes in penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct (10), elbowing (2), and head checking (5). When Patteson was called for tripping at 7:21 with Chris Schultz already in the box for hooking, East found themselves on the short side of a 5-on-3. Then at 8:09, defenseman JP Harris forced a turnover just inside the Wild zone and beat the Wild goalie for a 6-0 lead. East killed off the 5-on-3 and then the rest of Patteson's penalty. In the 10th minute of the third period, East defenseman Cleeter was called for hooking followed by Wild defenseman Nick Duesterhoft for elbowing. During the 4-on-4 play, the Wild kept the puck in the East zone, but they were not able to get many shots on net. The game ended when a Wild player was whistled for head checking with half a second to go. Once again East goaltender Taylor Stobaugh shut out the opposition this time stopping 17 shots. Harris led the offense with his two goals. Patteson and Mudgett each had 3 points: a goal and two assists for Patteson and three assists for Mudgett. East moves on to a semifinal game against fifth seeded De Soto - Grand Prairie. The winner of that game will face off against the winner of Wednesday's game between second seeded Plano West and third seeded Arlington Martin.East's next game is Tuesday April 10, 8:30 PM at the Frisco Dr. Pepper Star Center.

East hockey beats Keller 7-0, advances in playoffs

Top ranked Plano East showed a solid, all-around effort against #16 Keller that resulted in a 7-0 win to open the Varsity Silver division playoffs. From the first face off, East dominated puck possession and created a two goal lead within four minutes of play. Zack Patteson opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 3:13 of the first period. Patteson curled out from the left-wing corner and sent a wrister from the left face-off dot that beat Keller goalie Kyle Kelly high on the glove side. Taylor O'Bryon scored the other two first period goals for East. For the first one, shown at left, East defenseman Chris Schultz sprung O'Bryon for a break away up the middle of the ice. O'Bryon faked to the forehand, pulled it to his backhand and sent a wrister over Kelly's right leg pad at 3:53. At 7:58, East forward Eric Henigsmith shot the puck on net and it bounced into the slot area. O'Bryon scooped up the loose puck and fired another backhander past Kelly for a 3-0 East lead. The second period saw East score four goals with forward Forest Mudgett, right, getting two goals and an assist. Senior James Mobley scored at 2:52 with assists from sophomore brother Andrew Mobley, and Andy Waldschmidt. At 4:11 of the second period, Mudgett skated with the puck out of the left corner and put a wrister top shelf to move the score to 5-0. Henigsmith and Luke Holt assisted on the play. Patteson potted his second goal of the night at 7:54 on a 5-on-3 power play with assists from Mudgett and Reid Cleeter. At 8:16, Mudgett scored an unassisted powerplay goal to finish out East's scoring at 7-0.Both goalies, Taylor Stobaugh for East and Kyle Kelly for Keller wouldn't let anything by them in the third period. Kelly made a couple of good saves to keep the score at 7-0. Keller could not keep the puck long enough to get shots on net and they were outshot 36-9 for the game. Stobaugh, below, finished the game facing nine shots and stopping all of them for the shutout. East will faceoff against Arlington Wild in the quarterfinal round. The puck drops at 8:30 at the Plano Dr. Pepper Star Center.
