All they want in return is for Kimmie to be part of a loving family that will give her the time and love that she deserves. Adoption fee is $85.00. This includes Spay/Neuter, rabies vaccination, microchip, combo shot. (sponsor will cover the $85.00 adoption fee) Kimmie is an owner surrender. She is around 7 months old. She is very sweet girl. She walks on a leash well. She does need some training. She is not totally house broken. She has spent most of her life indoors with little training. With some tender loving care she would make a great addition to your family.

Murphy Police Department pushes Halloween safety

MURPHY (October 22, 2010) Officers of the Murphy Police Department will be out in force on the evening of Sunday, October 31 to ensure that trick-or-treaters of all ages complete their task of obtaining the maximum amount of sweets and returning home safely, according to Chief of Police G.M. Cox. “Unfortunately, Halloween night is notoriously famous for pranks such as adorning houses and trees with toilet paper or filling mailboxes with shaving cream,” he said. While these annoyances are exasperating and bothersome, police will be vigilant for the more serious incidences of crime. “We encourage parents to be our partners in enforcing the laws of the city, and the rules of civility. Parents are their children’s first teachers, and we hope that the lessons taught at home have been good ones,” he added. In that respect, parents should make it a point to become aware of their children’s trick-or-treat plans before they leave the house. While parents want their kids to enjoy themselves, the minors should be reminded that there are some tricks that could hurt other people or vandalize property. Parents should emphasize the importance of not allowing the consequences of a bad decision to ruin their holiday fun. The Murphy Police Department issues the following Halloween safety tips: • Go out in daylight and carry a flashlight in case of delay, • Motorists be alert for small children, remember the speed limit in residential areas is 25 miles per hour, • Adults should accompany young children, • Wear light-colored clothing that’s short enough to prevent tripping and add reflective tape to the sides, front and back of costume, • Make sure children can see well through face masks, or use cosmetics to create fun or scary faces, • Watch for traffic, • When crossing the street be sure to look both ways for oncoming traffic, • Avoid unwrapped candy or homemade food, • Examine all candy or consumable goods before allowing children to consume, • Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers or swords, • Substitute with foam rubber which is soft and flexible, • Stay in the neighborhood and only visit homes you are familiar with, • Keep costumed children away from pets; they may not recognize the child and become frightened, • Remind children not to enter a strange house or car. If you suspect that someone has ingested contaminated food or candy, contact North Texas Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If you need immediate medical attention, dial 9-1-1. The nearest emergency room is located at E. Renner Road and the George Bush Turnpike in Richardson. “Residents can help extend the reach of the Police Department by being vigilant and reporting all suspicious activity to the Murphy Police Department at (972) 468-4236, or 9-1-1 in an emergency. As we continually say, your safety is our concern. That’s not just a slogan, it’s our commitment,” concluded the chief.

Langford Grants Timbers Its Greatest Wish!

Eric Langford, developer of Murphy Marketplace, is bringing big smiles to the residents of The Timbers—the neighborhood at the stoplight of FM 544 and Hawthorne. Ever since TX DOT widened both Murphy Road and FM 544, The Timbers’ entrances have been without electricity and lights. For many years, the sprinkler system at the Hawthorne entrance has required someone to turn the system on and off manually every few days in order to keep what little landscaping was there alive. But that is about to change, thanks to Mr. Langford’s generosity. In August, Maggie Whitt, president of the Timbers Community Organization, asked Mr. Langford if he would consider giving the non-profit voluntary neighborhood association a grant to “help us restore our Hawthorne entrance so we can join the city in its beautification efforts.” Ms. Whitt informed Mr. Langford that “we are very mindful of the impact our neighborhood has on outsiders’ perceptions of Murphy due to our prime location, and we are doing our best to upgrade our appearance as fast as we can. Thanks to 50% participation by our homeowners, we have been able to plant and maintain new flowers and bushes at all three of our entrances. However, without help, it would be at least 5 years before we could save enough money to restore our electric service.”Mr. Langford not only agreed to fund the project; he also agreed to actually make it happen. As Mr. Langford noted, “We already have the people in place who know how to do all of the things you need, and they can do it for far less than you would pay to hire someone.” Mr. Langford appointed Tom Day, president of his own real estate services company, as the project’s manager. Mr. Day expects the first phase to be completed by the end of October. With great enthusiasm, Ms. Whitt acknowledged, “We are doing the best that we can with the limited resources we have in order to make our neighborhood into a showplace that will make a powerful statement about what citizens can do when they care about their city. We cannot do it alone, and we VERY much appreciate Mr. Langford’s partnership!”

"Woods" and Kathleen Lockwood Teaming Together to Make a Difference

“Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve”, a well known quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has been a catalyst for many to serve in many capacities. Murphy resident Kathleen Lockwood was recently looking for a way to serve the community as a volunteer. After looking at various opportunities, she is now able to combine her love for dogs and her compassion for people with disabilities or other special needs by becoming a Team Leader with Canine Assistants. The organization is located in Georgia where Kathleen attended a week long training program and was matched up with her service dog, “Woods”. He is a beautiful, well mannered Golden Retriever/Lab mix who has nearly two years of training including over 60 commands in his repertoire. Her family also has two rescue dogs and Woods was quickly integrated into the home. “One of our primary missions is to educate both children and adults about disabilities and the role that service dogs play in society,” says Kathleen. She hopes to increase awareness of the Canine Assistants program by doing presentations at schools, libraries, nursing/assistant living homes and other public events. Some of the tasks that the dogs are trained to perform include turning lights on and off, opening and closing doors, pulling wheelchairs, retrieving dropped objects, summoning help and providing secure companionship. One of the most moving moments during her training in Georgia was to hear a young girl say the benefit of having her service dog was that, “He makes my wheelchair disappear!” Woods and other service dogs are sponsored by Delta Airlines, Milk-Bone Products and The Epilepsy Foundation. A local veterinarian will donate his services to provide annual examinations and shots. Kathleen and her family provides for the day to day care and food for him. As a Team Leader, she will also host fundraising activities for the non-profit organization. Named “Noah’s Team of Collin County”, volunteers are needed for the Support Team to help raise awareness about service dogs with schools, businesses and civic groups. For more information, contact Kathleen at noahsteamofcollincounty@canineassistants.org. By Rhonda Hodge

Finding the fun in life’s frustrations: Murphy humorist Diana Estill to be featured at Barnes & Noble’s Great New Writers Event Plano, TX—Murphy resident and author Diana Estill will sign and discuss her latest book, Deedee Divine’s Totally Skewed Guide to Life (Corncob Press), during Barnes & Noble’s Great New Writers event, Saturday, March 28, noon to 2:00 p.m., at the Creekwalk store, located at 801 W. 15th Street, Plano, TX.
A Happy Ending to a 9-1-1 Situation

By Rhonda Hodge Friday, July 18, 2008 started about the same as any other summer day for Mr. Harvey Browning of Greenfield Drive in Murphy. He mowed the lawn early in the morning before the sun was totally unbearable and decided to take his morning jog. Mr. Browning usually takes his normal route through a neighborhood park near the elementary school. As his wife Tammy took her morning walk with the dog, she heard the EMS sirens in the background. Upon returning home, she noticed that Harvey had not returned, even though he had left over an hour ago. Considering that he had cut the lawn as well as gone for a jog and the warming temperatures, she decided to go in search of him. Not finding him at the park or along his usual route, Mrs. Browning returned home with concern now setting in and recalled the sounds of the blaring sirens somewhere in the neighborhood. Before panic could fully take over, she noticed the blinking red light of her answering machine. Three messages since she left the house in search of Harvey! They were from a hospital emergency room in Plano alerting her that her husband had been admitted at 9:15 a.m. and had not regained conscious until forty-five minutes later. Tammy and Harvey’s paths had virtually crossed just minutes before and only a few streets apart in their neighborhood. When Mrs. Browning recounts the events surrounding this potentially life changing event, their family is most thankful for the Good Samaritan who stopped to render aid when he noticed Harvey collapsed along Heritage Parkway near Betsy Lane. The Good Samaritan, who prefers to remain anonymous, had approached the area with caution since he noticed that several cars before him were tapping on their breaks. However, no one stopped to offer assistance. He did, and placed a life-saving 9-1-1 call to the Murphy EMS and Police Departments. CID (Criminal Investigation Division) Sergeant Snow Robertson was the first to arrive on the scene and administered CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) until the EMS Team arrived, mere minutes later. To read the rest of the story, click on "Full Story"

Neighbor to Neighbor

An Offering to the Trash GodsBy Margaret Malone Charles Dickens’ “Our Mutual Friend” opens with a description that reminds me how fortunate we are to have that all-important event on the city calendar, Bulky Trash Day. Perhaps it will become a national holiday one day. It also reminds me that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. You see, the London that Dickens portrayed didn’t have landfills or garbage pickups, and was once oppressed during a particularly hot summer by a phenomenon aptly called “the great stink.” Dickens’ London was home to a scavenger underclass that lived by harvesting all manner of rubbish. There were the “mudlarks,” children who wandered the banks of the Thames, gathering anything they could use or sell. There were the “toshers,” who combed through the sewers for the same reason. There were the rag-pickers and bone-pickers…and the “pure-finders.” You don’t want to know what they were looking for. It makes dumpster diving look posh. I don’t know about you, but I love Bulky Trash Day. When I was a kid in England, we didn’t have a municipal large-trash pickup service. We did have a neighborhood “rag and bone man” who would go around the neighborhoods every so often, collecting all manner of large junk. The rag and bone man was a cultural figure in many cities and towns. There was even a popular and very long-running sitcom, “Steptoe and Son,” devoted to a hilariously vindictive rag and bone man and his oppressed son. The show was later remade in the USA as “Sanford and Son.” Waste Management’s service seems awfully refined by comparison. So I’m looking forward to an opportunity for a bit of liberating de-clutter. It’s amazing how much junk a family household can collect. Although we donate almost everything we no longer use, broken and worn out items tend to collect over time, like the Jurassic-era fossilized computer and the broken kitchen chair I got rid of last trash day.

Nastia Liukin's Homecoming at DFW Airport - A Golden Moment

By Matt Gomez Nastia Liukin greeted several hundred fans with the same poise and confidence that helped her win 5 medals. She thanked everyone for coming out and admitted she "thought it was going to be a few girls from the gym and coaches". When asked about the characters on the shirt she was wearing, Miss Liukin proudly stated " It says Beijing". She laughed off "will you marry me" comments from the crowd and was quick to say "no" when asked about a boyfriend (to the delight of many). After the introductions and a few questions it was clear something was missing. Her father left for a few moments and returned with the "hardware". Miss Liukin pulled all 5 medals out of a small purple bag and glowed as she held them up for the crowd. She is not sure where she will keep the medals but will "keep them in her purse" for now. When asked about the age of the Chinese performers Miss Liukin answered as a true champion by saying, "We don't know exactly what their ages are. They say they're the right age...and they're able to compete and that's fine. We can only control our performances and what we do out there on the floor." Asked about future Olympics, "2012 isn't out of the question right now, but I'm taking it one day at a time," Liukin said. Nastia and Carly Patterson Parker Mayor Congratulates Nastia Nastia rides home in limo and greeted by happy supporters Liukin will leave soon for a gymnastics tour but not before the City of Parker hosts a parade in her honor on Saturday, August 30th at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at Victory Church on Parker Road followed by a reception at Southfork Ranch. Shuttle service to the parade will be avialable from Kimbrough Stadium. Corinth Presbyterian Church will welcome visitors who might like to view the historic building on Saturday, August 30, following the Welcome Home parade for Nastia Liukin. The building, located at 5609 East Parker Road, across Parker Road from the Parker Municipal Building and water tower, was built in 1923 and has unique period stained glass windows. The main window facing Parker Road is a portrait of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. An unusual aspect of the window is that Jesus has six toes on his right foot. Historic pictures of the church through the years are also on display. Congregation members will be available to welcome visitors following the parade which begins at 9:00 am. The Rev. Linda McCormick is pastor of Corinth Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Living at the Manor House

This Spud’s For You!! Now let’s be honest! When you think of a picnic or a backyard barbecue or a wedding shower buffet or your favorite side dish when sitting down to a homemade deli sandwich, who doesn’t think of potato salad?! It’s an absolute MUST for all of those events… and then some!! Our friend, Mr. Potato, has been around for a very long time. In fact, the oldest known cultivation of the potato plants occurred in Chile, where the potato crop was planted and harvested long before the Spanish ever arrived. Subsequently, the potato was introduced to Europe in 1536 and not surprisingly taken by European mariners to territories and ports throughout the world. Thousands of varieties persist in the Andes, where over 100 varieties might be found in a single valley region. Once established in Europe, the potato soon became an important food staple and field crop. However, lack of genetic diversity, due to the fact that very few varieties were initially introduced, left the crop vulnerable to disease. In 1845, a fungal disease spread rapidly through the poorer communities of western Ireland, resulting in the Great Irish Famine. The potato is also strongly associated with Idaho, Maine, Washington, North Dakota, Prince Edward Island, Ireland, Jersey and Russia because of its large role in the agricultural economy and history of these regions. But in recent decades, the greatest expansion of potato has been in Asia, where as of 2007 approximately eighty percent of the world potato crop is grown. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, China has become the world's largest potato producer, followed by India. For tasty recipies, click on "Full Story"

Murphy Quads & Parents Doing Well but Still Facing Challenges

Murphy residents Rob and Casey Gerwer are counting their blessings – which happens to total four. On January 16, 2008, Casey gave birth to quadruplets – Trey, Reid, Cameron and Brady. Born eleven weeks early and weighing around two pounds each, the quads have come a long way from their days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. After arriving home in March, the babies and their parents adapted to their new schedule very quickly. Casey said the most difficult thing for her has been finding time to spend alone with her husband. “I also have had a really hard time leaving my kids with other people,” she said. Rob said his biggest challenge has been adjusting to the financial aspect of raising four babies. The quads go through approximately 220 diapers and 28 bottles of formula every week. The last few months have been full of milestones for the quads. After months of sleep deprivation, Rob and Casey are finally getting a full night’s sleep. “We still get up to check on them,” Casey said, “but not having to get up for an hour and half twice a night has really improved our sleep schedule. We can actually get six to seven straight hours of sleep now!”Other milestones include holding up their head during “tummy time”, grabbing their toys, babbling and smiling. “My favorite part of every morning is when they smile up at me from their cribs,” Rob said. “And I can’t wait to watch them all play together.”Casey said that developmentally and physically the quads are doing really well. Developmentally they are a little bit ahead of their adjusted age, which is four months,” she said. “Their adjusted age is how old they would be had they gone full term.”Additional milestones to come in the next couple months should include laughing, sitting up and playing with each other. Casey added that it is common for multiples to develop their own language in the early years that only they can understand. “I’m really looking forward to seeing them crawl,” Casey said, “although I’ll probably regret saying that later.” She added that although the quads are small for six-month-olds, they should be caught up to other full term babies by the time they are twelve months old.Unfortunately the quads still have some challenges ahead. They will receive cranial bands on July 24, which will help reshape their heads. Premature babies often need these due to the fact that their skulls are still not developed when they are born. The bands will be worn for six to eight weeks and cost $3600 each. The Gerwers feel it is important that the quads get to experience the things that any singleton would. “It’s important to take them out so they know how to act in public and so we know how to deal with them in public,” Casey said. “We have taken the quads out to eat, to a neighborhood party, walked in a Fourth of July parade, gone shopping and have even taken them swimming.” The quads were also baptized on May 18 at a private ceremony at their grandparent’s home in Murphy.Although the Gerwers do not know what the future holds for them and their four little miracles, they are taking things one day at a time and hoping for the best. For more information about the quads, please visit http://gerwerbabies.blogspot.com/

Murphy for Obama ’08 volunteers put their hunger aside Tuesday night as they waited for the results of the caucus. Their watch party at Amado’s Mexican Cantina was delayed as they stayed to show their support at the Murphy Fire Station. The group was organized in the last month when Kim Tolbert and Veronica Lacy realized they wanted to galvanize as many people as possible in their Murphy community. (Pictured are Kim Tolbert, Angela Card & Veronica Lacy)“Even a community as small as Murphy has a lot of political leadership and we wanted to focus on that,” Tolbert said.“We want to put Murphy on the map,” Lacy added. “This is history in the making and we have broken all barriers of religion and color.”Tolbert said the Murphy for Obama ’08 volunteers have been working diligently doing phone banking, canvassing neighborhoods and hosting local events like Tuesday evening’s watch party.Lacy said they are working on putting together a website.“It’s definitely not too late to get involved,” she emphasized. If you would like to get involved with Murphy for Obama ’08, you may contact Kim Tolbert at bizor3@verizon.com or Veronica Lacy at lacy4@tx.rr.com Obama supporters all smiles as they wait to vote - again.Clinton supporters have even more to smile about today!

MISSING COUPLE FOUND SAFE IN MURPHY

[Murphy] - On Monday, September 25, 2007 at approximately 9:18 P.M., the Murphy Police Department was notified of two missing persons who were last seen in a city park. A relative, Yujie Guo reported that their elderly parents had walked with their daughter to Mustang Park, located on Mustang Ridge Drive around 8:00 P.M. The daughter returned home alone to get her vehicle to drive them back home, but when they returned to the park, her parents were nowhere to be found. Police personnel responded to the scene and made contact with the complainant who identified the missing couple as Heng Wang Zhou and his wife, Fan Ying Kong, both in their mid to upper 60’s. The couple was described as both wearing white or light colored shirts and dark colored pants. After an initial check of the surrounding area yielded nothing, the Police Department called upon the Murphy Fire Department for assistance in continuing the search. An intensive search of the area was undertaken. Additional assistance was requested and received from the Wylie Police Department and the Allen Police Department, both of whom dispatched Police K-9 Units to assist in possible tracking, as well as the Parker Fire Department who sent two Engine companies to help search city streets and the surrounding areas. The Dallas Police Department also dispatched a Police Helicopter to provide an aerial search capability. A Unified Command Post, jointly staffed between Murphy Fire-Rescue and the Murphy Police Department was established inside the Murphy Fire Department and all search efforts were coordinated from that point. Units from all assisting agencies were assigned specific areas to search and then reported back to the command post if that specific search produced no results. All personnel were informed that the couple was visiting from China, were unfamiliar with the area and did not speak English. At approximately 11:25 P.M., nearly 3 ½ hours after they were last seen by relatives, a Murphy Fire-Rescue Medic Unit located the couple walking on Parkview Lane in the Rolling Ridge subdivision, a considerable distance from where they were last seen. The couple had apparently tried to walk back to their relatives home on Westminister Drive, but were disoriented and subsequently became lost. The couple was found to be in good condition and required no medical attention. Their son-in-law was driven to the location by Assistant Chief Mark Lee from Murphy Fire-Rescue and reunited with the couple to ensure their safe return home. Murphy Police Chief Billy Myrick and Murphy Fire-Rescue Chief Kelley Stalder would like to thank all of those who came to assist in this joint effort and both said that it is through these combined efforts that allow our agencies to be successful in events such as this

MURPHY PREPARES FOR 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION BY ESTABLISHING VOLUNTEER PROGRAM FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

The City of Murphy Public Events Advisory Committee is putting a call out for all citizens and community groups to volunteer for future city events, including next year’s milestone 50th anniversary of the city’s charter. Formed in September 2006, the committee is charged with increasing and expanding events provided by the city. Recognizing that growth in city-sponsored events cannot be supported solely by existing volunteer city boards and salaried city workers, the committee began devising a method of increasing the number of volunteers available to staff city events. The city will open volunteer opportunities to the entire community with an easy-to-complete application form available on the Murphy website. The application includes a simple questionnaire about volunteer areas of interest and expertise. Community groups may use the same application. The formal volunteer program will be established using the resulting database providing the perfect match between volunteer and project. Orientation sessions and volunteer training will be staffed by skilled volunteers, and volunteer recognition programs are in the planning stages. Mayor Bret Baldwin has thrown his full support behind the committee’s effort stating, “This volunteer organizing effort is a great thing for the city and should be expanded to benefit all city programs.” Assistant City Manager Jeff Bickerstaff encourages Scouts, Home Owners Associations, church groups and other community groups to apply and participate. “Student groups such as National Honor Society and others are welcome,” he says. “We’ll even provide a record of community service hours worked to those individuals requesting them.” According to committee chair Natalie Montgomery, “Upcoming events provide the perfect opportunity for Murphy citizens to get involved, especially as the city celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008. We’ve been told that next year’s celebration should ‘put Murphy’s Fall Festival on the map!’” The volunteer application form can be found on the city’s home page at www.murphytx.org. Interested volunteers can print out the application online and return it to City Hall by mail, fax or simply dropping the form at the front reception desk. Mailing address and fax number can be found on the first page of the application. For additional information about how to volunteer, please contact Peggy Murphy at 214-356-1335 or email at phmurph@aol.com.

They Don't Call it the "Ironman" Triathlon for Nothing!

You swim, you bike, you run—all in the same day and one right after the other with no resting in between. It’s grueling and exhausting. Just ask Murphy resident Max Barron, who recently returned from competing in the Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid Triathlon held July 22nd in the Adirondacks of New York State.A competitive swimmer in high school and college, Max was confident he would do well in the Ironman’s 2.4 mile swim. For the past six months Max had trained in Lake Lavon and the Lifetime Fitness lap pool, pushing himself to better his times. He was ready to take on the 2200 other competitors who may or may not be strong swimmers. His bicycle, a Colnago Titanio, had been taken on many training rides in preparation for the Ironman 112-mile bike event. Often pedaling to Oklahoma to conquer some mountainous terrain, on weekends Max would jump on his bike at 4:30 am. and not roll home until late afternoon. Max , on a daily schedule, would stretch out his long legs and pound his feet onto various surfaces doing his running training either before or after a rigorous swim or bicycle ride. His feet were as determined as his spirit to complete the 26.2 mile run at Lake Placid that was the final of the three events.Click on "Full Story"

Newest Entries in the Summer Vacation Photo Contest

Where is Friar Tuck? The photo was taken at Major Oak in Sherwood Forest in Nottingham, England. Major Oak is a tree that is over 700 years old that Robin Hood used to sleep in/on. Pretty impressive tree that is being held up by stilts to help keep it from collapsing and stay alive. The history behind the tree is extremely interesting. The distance from Murphy to Nottingham, England is 4,656 miles. "In the photo is Caryn, Chris, William and Jonathan Rooke with our favorite local paper, The Murphy Messenger!" On a huge sign The Great Wall tells everyone that the theme of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics is "One World, One Dream." Dongjie Cheng visited the Great Wall with the Murphy Messenger on July 16, 2007. The Great Wall looked more majestic than in the photo when I stood on it. I was really sweaty but excited after climbing to a high point. Local people challenge visitors with Chairman Mao's famous words, "You are not a hero yet before you get on the Great Wall." Distance from Murphy: 6987.9 miles A Tisket a Tasket, What’s inside the Longaberger Basket/Building? Elizabeth McCormick is pictured in front of The Longaberger Company headquarters building in Newark, Ohio (with the Messenger). The building is 7 Stories tall and weighs 9000 tons. The handles weigh 150 tons and are heated to prevent ice from forming. The 2 Longaberger tags are attached to the sides of the building. The gold leaf painted tags are 725 lbs each and measure 25 feet long! When Dave Longaberger (founder) took this idea to the architects- he was told it couldn't be done. His response? If they can put a man on the moon, they can certainly build a building that's shaped like a basket." The building has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, People magazine, Time magazine and US News and World Report. The Acuna family visited The Badlands in South Dakota and also added their faces to this picture of Mt. Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota! Maybe a future President Isabelle, Alexander or Sophie to carve into the side of the mountain? Florence Abubaker traveled to Jordan to visit relatives in Amman following a stop in France. Then they traveled to Petra that is the most unusual of places, since it was newly added to the list of world wonders. Pictured is son, Sam, and family members. Distance to Petra, Jordan from Murphy 7070.1 miles. Tanya Paul, back from India, 9382.7 miles from Murphy, traveled to Kochi, Kerala (southernmost tip of India) and the Messenger went with her. It was a 2-1/2 day journey by plane. The Kothamangalam Church is historical church in Kerala, which was built in the early 1600's and it's still standing strong! Samantha and Alex Chopp visited the Herrenchiemsee Palace, located on the "Herreninsel", an island in the middle of the Chiemsee, one of Bavaria's largest lakes, 60 km south east of Munich, Germany. It is the biggest palace built by "King Ludwig II of Bavaria", built between 1878 and 1885. The palace is full scale replica of King Louis XIV's "Palace of Versailles", France, which was meant to oudo its predecessor in scale and opulence. But the palace was never finished once the king ran out of money, and Ludwig lived there for only 10 days before his mysterious death.

Mary Zumwalt Wins State Ms. Senior Pageant

Mary Zumwalt is going to Las Vegas in November to represent the state of Texas at the Ms. Senior America Pageant! Competing in Dallas on Saturday, August 11th, against 21 contestants from around the state, Mary walked away with the crown and honor of being named Ms. Senior Texas 2007. Contestants were judged on their philosophy of life, talent, evening gown presentation and their interviews with the judges. For the talent portion of the competition, Mary performed an original piano piece that she composed and arranged. Mary has been playing piano since the age of 3, both reading music and playing by ear, which she says is a truly God given gift. Mary uses her piano talents at Murphy Road Baptist Church, the Plano Senior Citizens Center and for her friends’ enjoyment. We wish Ms. Senior Texas 2007, Mary Zumwalt, the very best of luck when she represents Murphy and Texas in the National pageant. Mary is married to Jack Zumwalt and they are Murphy residents.

The hot dogs were cooking, the pizzas were delivered, and multiple frozen desserts were judged and thoroughly enjoyed by Police and Fire Department personnel! Regardless of the size of the block party, police officers, Explorers and fire fighters made their way around Murphy Tuesday night to visit with citizens, which is the purpose of National Night Out. Much to the delight of the children, and one “pretend casualty” who couldn’t resist trying out the new ambulance, the fire trucks, emergency vehicles and police cars had their doors wide open for close-up inspection.
What in the heck is Geocaching??

The website: www.geocaching.com will give you a detailed explanation of this fun/educational – family/individual - recreation/hobby, but I learned about it first hand from Murphy resident, David Hawkins. When I asked David about his favorite pastime and sport, and yes, geocaching is considered a sport, he said, “If you like orienteering, a compass, being sneaky and scavenger hunts, you’ll like geocaching.” The website, mentioned above, defines geocaching as an entertaining adventure game for GPS (Global Positioning System) users. The term geocaching is formed from “geo,” the part that refers to geography, and “caching” the part that pertains to a “cache” or storage, and also means a place to hide things. That part of the game I thought might be easier until I saw how a “cache” is often disguised and hidden. “If it was a bear it could bite you,” comes to mind.
Revised Watering Days

North Texas Municipal Water District has agreed to allow cities to relax water restrictions from 1 day per week to 2 days. Dear Murphy Resident/Water Utility Customer: A revision to Murphy’s Restrictions will be effective on June 19, 2007. The new schedule was developed to allow water customers to irrigate their landscape twice per week. The City will still continue however, to enforce all of the other requirements of Stage 3 Water Restriction guidelines. Please review the new allowed watering times below. The following summarizes the water restrictions in effect under Stage 3 for residential and business customers regarding automatic irrigation. Irrigation of existing landscape areas with hose-end sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems is limited to the following schedule based on the last digit of the address: Street address ending in an odd number (1,3,5,7,9)Wednesday watering time6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM to 10:00 PMSaturday watering time:6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM to 10:00 PMStreet address ending in an even number (0,2,4,6,8)Thursday watering time6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM to 10:00 PMSunday watering time:6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM to 10:00 PMThe use of automatic irrigation is prohibited on any other day other than your designated schedule above. However, you can water by means of hand-held hoses on any day, at any time. The watering days have been changed to be consistent with Stage 2 of the City of Murphy Drought Contingency Plan. Common areas within subdivisions owned and maintained by a Homeowners Association are being recognized as even number addresses and may only water on Thursdays and Sundays during the watering times listed above. For questions about Stage 3 or to get a copy of City of Murphy’s Drought Contingency Plan, please visit City Hall, call 972-468-4000. Destination: Most Unusual - Independence Pass - Continental DivideWhere were you? The photo was taken on June 2 as we drove back to Texas from Aspen, Colorado. Independence Pass is one of the most dangerous roads in America. At points it is one lane with steep cliffs on one side, and sheer dropoffs on the other. (10 mph only!) The road had only been open for about a week since it takes a while to clear away snow, rocks, and tree debris from the Winter storms. It was about 45 degrees when the photo was taken and much colder with the wind! It is amazing what a change in altitude can do to the temperature!
After several fundraisers and many months of waiting, Colton Ruscitti’s certified service dog, “Charlie,” has arrived. Dianne Long and Bev Swartz, service dog trainers with All Purpose Canines in Aberdeen, S. Dakota, accompanied Charlie to Murphy and began on-site training with the Ruscitti’s on May 14th. Colton, a soon to be five year old, is autistic. Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. In Colton’s case, sounds hurt his ears, he has limited speech abilities, and he cannot socially navigate interactions with peers. He struggles each day to survive in the world around him. He wanders away from home, has a difficult time dealing with being in public places, and is frustrated easily.
[Murphy] - Zero, a Boston Terrier now just about three years old was only a year and a half old when he was taken from the backyard of his owner’s, Daniel and Andrea Chavez in Dallas, Texas sometime in August of 2005, he has not been seen since. On Saturday, May 5, 2007, a Murphy resident found a Boston Terrier running loose in a local sub-division. He first took the animal to the Plano Animal Shelter, but was directed to return to the City of Murphy and contact Murphy Animal Control. The resident returned to the city, but stopped and solicited the assistance of a local veterinarian’s office who then made the call to ACO Sandra Potter.

He was the second “full time” police officer to hit the streets in Murphy. The first officer left to take employment as a Chief in another department. Until that time, Chief Garwacki was assisted by other part-time employees and Reserves Officers. Ferguson began his career as a Reserve Officer, but just a few months later, he was offered the opportunity to begin full time employment by Chief Garwacki. Now, after more than 20 years of service to the City of Murphy, Lt. Ferguson has decided to bring to an end to his current tour of duty. Over the course of his career, which has spanned more than 28 years, Ferguson also served with the Woodland Hills, Dallas County Community College District, Hutchins, Wilmer and Balch Springs Police Departments, before joining the Murphy force. Murphy Police Chief Billy Myrick said that throughout his years with the department, “Benny” has served as a Patrol Officer, Patrol Sergeant and as Lieutenant over both the Criminal Investigation and Support Services Divisions. Having now served the people of this Murphy for more that twenty (20) years, Lt. Ferguson has come forward and announced his intent to retire from his position with the department, effective Friday, May 18, 2007. In a lengthy discussion with Lt. Ferguson told me that he has reached a point where he simply wants to pursue some other interests in life, after taking about 2-3 months off to go fishing, relax and just spend some much overdue time with this family. Lt. Ferguson has achieved many, many successes during his career and should be commended for a “Job Well Done.” For those who have come to know “Benny” over the last 20+ years, we invite you to join us for a “Retirement Party” that will be held on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. at the Murphy Fire Department to help us honor his service to this community. We especially want those to come forward who might just have some good stories to share about Benny’s time with the department! We wish “Benny” the VERY BEST as he goes now to pursue the next endeavors in his life.

Lisa Roberts Performance HorsesMurphy, TX It seems like every other day for the past three weeks there has been a new foal gracing the paddock of Lisa Roberts’ property at the corner of McMillen Road and North Murphy Road. It’s quite a sight to drive by and see the foals lined up nursing from their moms and then later driving back by to find them all laying on mounds of hay taking a nap. If you decide to park your car and walk up to the N. Murphy Road fence, most likely you’ll be greeted somewhat cautiously by the moms and foals, followed by either a snort of approval and an outstretched neck inviting a pat or two, or flying dirt as the mom and its baby put some distance between you and them. Eight of the ten expected paint foals, all sired by the same stallion, Denali, have greeted the world healthy and with wobbly legs and skittish moves.

Chance Cranford was named after Chance McKenzie, a character played by Sam Elliott in the 1983-84 television series, The Yellow Rose. He’s not a rancher, far from it, but he does possess the rugged determination of one. Prior to September 6, 1997, Chance was an active boy who loved athletics. A freshman at Tom Bean High School, he was an “A” student and played quarterback in football and point guard in basketball. Chance was fourteen years old with unlimited opportunities on the horizon when he was injured in a hunting accident. Chance woke up three weeks later in Parkland Hospital with most of his face gone, including his sight. For two years he couldn’t put anything in his mouth, no water, no food—nothing. He was fed through tubes. But his attitude was good, and he attributes his miraculous rehabilitation to his wonderful mom, dad, family and friends. In spite of his new challenges he never lost his self confidence. To read more about Chance, click "Full Story"

Along with the Easter baskets, winter coats had to be dragged out for the Saturday morning Egg Hunt at Liberty Ridge Park in Rolling Ridge. It wasn’t just cold, it was snowing! The best hand-warmers were the Moebius’ two dogs that didn’t seem to mind the extra attention. The flurries didn’t put a freeze on the enthusiasm though - children bounced in two bounce houses and then scattered to collect eggs and return to the prize table for special gifts.
Cars Lined up at the Pumps to Take Advantage of Gas Buy Down - 25 cents off per gallon compliments of the Springs Church

The pumps opened at 11 a.m. for the Gas Buy Down sponsored by the Springs Church, a new Murphy church led by Pastor Joel Halprin. The pastor and members were easily identifiable in their red shirts as they greeted drivers, directed traffic, held signage roadside and assisted customers at the pumps. All the while with a smile on their faces. The Exxon store manager changed the prices on the marquee to reflect the 25 cents off per gallon. Instead of paying $2.40 per gallon for regular gas, those who came early only had to pay $2.15 – The Springs paid the remaining 25 cents per gallon. All three grades of gas were discounted until a total of 4000 gallons of gas had been pumped. It was no surprise that the line to the pumps often extended into the McDonald’s parking lot but everyone remained congenial and didn’t seem to mind the wait. What a great way for a new church to make friends in a community--fast! The Springs meets at Boggess Elementary School, 225 Glen Ridge Drive. But all turned out well on Saturday when the rain moved on and sun came out. In addition to the Egg Hunt, there was face painting, crafts, games, concessions and tours throughout In-Sync Exotics where lions, tigers, cougars, servals, leopards, bobcats, lynx and a coatamundi could be seen. This fundraising event is held annually. The next event will be the Big Cat’s Birthday Party later this summer.

If you’ve been praying for lower gas prices, Pastor Joel Halprin and his congregation are answering! The Springs Church, a new Murphy church that meets at Boggess Elementary, is pumped up about contributing 25 cents on the gallon toward your fill-up on Saturday, March 31st at the Murphy Exxon Station beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Halprin said, “The gas buy down is simply a way for our new church to show Murphy that we love them. We really just want to do something for the community with no strings attached. We want people to know we are a practical church that offers practical answers, and what better way to show that than to meet a need that affects us all. Gas prices are rising again, so we thought that this would be a small way to show people that we really care in a practical way.”To read more about Saturday's Gas Buy Down, click on "Full Story"

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Murphy Marketplace It didn’t rain! The festivities celebrating the onset of Murphy Marketplace were dry as a chip and exciting in every way. Complete with a catered lunch held at the fire hall, the blessing and pledge lead by Mayor Bret Baldwin, good wishes extended by Collin County Commissioner Jerry Hoagland and Judge Keith Self combined with exciting details shared by City Manager Craig Sherwood and Murphy Marketplace Developer Eric Langford, Langford Property Company, the indoor portion of the ceremony went off without a hitch. With one exception--a fire call as Mr. Sherwood began to speak. Some would contend that the fire truck sirens actually were sounding for the 900 jobs that will be added in Murphy when Murphy Marketplace is completed and sales tax revenues increasing from $500,000 to over 3 million dollars per year. Mr. Langford gave a few hints as to the tenants moving into Murphy Marketplace:For more pictures and more about the stores coming to Murphy Marketplace, click "Full Story"

By Marcia JowersIt’s not often I see a play that causes me to have a more than temporary emotional reaction, let alone become so absorbed by each character, regardless of their role, that their plight and lives are contemplated long past the final curtain. True, I primarily enjoy attending musicals where I become more captivated by the clever choreography and musicality than the story line, but I’ve seen my share of the serious productions as well. While the “feel good” musicals are entertaining, I must tell you, "The Cover of Life" is a “feel more” production. Garland Civic Theatre’s “The Cover of Life” is based on a true story that makes the characters even more remarkable. The play was written by R. T. Robinson who wrote the play based on his father, two uncles, their wives, his grandmother, and two reporters, one from the Times Picayune and the other from Life Magazine. To read more about "The Cover Of Life", click "Full Story"

The Springs Church, a new Murphy church that meets at Boggess Elementary, is pumped up about contributing $ .25 cents on the gallon toward your fill-up on Saturday, March 31st at the Murphy Exxon Station beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Halprin said, “The gas buy down is simply a way for our new church to show Murphy that we love them. We hope the discounted gas will last for an hour or two, but we will stay there until it has all been used. In addition to cheap gas, some of the church members will be there to wash windows and we will even pray with anyone that wants it.

One of Texas’ most exciting retail centers will break ground on March 23, launching construction for a development that will be home to leading retail brands and will be a lifestyle destination for East Collin County. Covering 48 acres, Murphy Marketplace’s tenants will include such major national brands as Sprouts Farmers Market and more. The site has been popular with retailers because it is the major crossroads between Central Expressway on the west and Highway 78 on the east, and between Firewheel Mall to the south and Southfork Ranch/Allen Main Street to the north. The pending expansion of Murphy Road (FM 2551) to six lanes will further cement this intersection as the most important one in the sub-region. “We are thrilled to begin construction on Murphy Marketplace, a brand new and unique destination for Murphy and Collin County,” said Eric Langford, president of Langford Property Company, the owner and developer of the brand new center. “Our partnership with the City of Murphy has been a wonderful program of teamwork to attract such strong brands to a community that needs and will enjoy all the quality of life enhancements that Murphy Marketplace will bring.” For more renderings and information, click "Full Story"

To Russia (and back) With Love - Mission Ivanovo Launched

You may recall an earlier story in the Messenger about Murphy resident Jennifer Davis who was organizing a mission trip to Russia to provide assistance to several orphanages in Ivanovo. One of the orphanages she was to visit was the one she and her husband Randal adopted two of their children from. Jennifer is back in Murphy with an incredible story. Jennifer, Kerri Fishencord, Chad and Dani Womack, all from First Baptist Church in Wylie, left DFW airport on January17th and arrived in Moscow, via Zurik, 18 hours later. After a 5 hour van ride to Ivanovo, they met with the Ivanovo Department of Education and government officials. With the aid of a translator, a 23 year old English Professor at the University of Ivanovo, official documents were secured for the Americans to visit two orphanages. One of the criteria for being granted access is if the result will somehow be beneficial to the Russian government. In this case, purchasing supplies and medicines for Russian children was deemed beneficial and the group’s status was raised from “tourist” to full and complete access for this trip and future trips. To learn how you can help Jennifer and Mission Ivanovo, click "full story."

Bradford Bishop, Goodyear Murphy, Proved it in January! “I just had a good experience at Goodyear. I went for what I figured would be a 20 minute state inspection. Well, the printer jammed and they couldn’t finish my inspection. It took over 90 minutes to get the printed un-jammed and me out the door. Bradford Bishop (Goodyear Manager), without me saying a thing about my frustrations, gave me a free oil change coupon ($21.95 value) for my troubles. I’ll take that customer service any day!”Nominated by: Eric Barna Each month the Messenger recognizes an individual who has demonstrated Exceptional Customer Service while assisting customers in a Murphy business. We invite our readers to submit the name(s) of those who should be commended for outstanding customer service, along with a brief outline about the good experience they had with the nominee. All nominations should be emailed to: marcia@murphymessenger.com.
This past Saturday Rolling Ridge bowlers (?) formed 3 teams to participate in a fund-raising tournament held at the Richardson AMF Lanes benefiting victims of domestic violence. Colleen Halbert who works for New Beginnings, an organization that provides help to domestic violence victims, recruited the Rolling Ridge teams with help from Jill Lambouses. There were no gutter balls for the “Pink Ladies” and “The Stingers” (named for the cocktail?) and “The King Pins” rolled for a great cause as well.

Murphy Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Celebration - Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market Named Business of the Year

Each January the Murphy Chamber steps away from its usual luncheon/guest speaker program to honor a Chamber Board Member; a Chamber Ambassador and a Chamber Business of the Year. It is also the time when new officers and board members assume new responsibilities and duties. This year’s luncheon took on an Italian theme with both decorations and food. Members enjoyed three pasta dishes, salad, bread sticks and cheese cake around centerpieces of candles, greenery and bottles of sparkling beverages that were later given as prizes to those lucky enough to have the winning ticket numbers.Lonnie Long, outgoing Chamber Chairman, presented a pictorial review of the functions and events of 2006. Then it was time to announce and recognize three people for their Chamber accomplishments.Lonnie Long presented a plaque and pink roses to Ambassador of the Year, Sammie Hampton. This is Sammie’s second year to win this award. Next was Board Member of the Year. Jon Lashbrook, incoming Chamber Chairman, made the announcement and plaque presentation to winner, Lonnie Long. Lonnie has served as Chamber Chairman for the past two years. Police Chief Billy Myrick and Fire Chief Kelley Stalder gave a preface to the announcement of the Business of the Year award, presented by City Manager Craig Sherwood. The Chiefs stated that this business has always been helpful and generous with their donations to both departments and to the City. The business has also financially supported the Chamber Scholarship Fund. Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market is this year’s Business of the Year. Well deserved, Store Manger, Ricky Tipton!
Mission Ivanovo Fundraising Coffee a Success

Jennifer Davis is counting the days before she leaves Murphy for her 7-day mission trip to Russia and the orphanage her two children were adopted from several years ago. Several months ago Jennifer and Randal received a letter telling of the sad conditions at the Shuya Home orphanage and also at two other orphanages nearby. All of the orphanages are in great need of help but sadly there are no charitable organizations providing assistance. Jennifer established “Mission Ivanovo” through First Baptist Church in Wylie to begin a ministry to give back to the Russian community and to the children. To help fund the mission trip to Russia, a fundraising coffee with silent auction was held at the church on January 5th, that raised $1800. And, as a result of the Messenger’s initial article in December about Jennifer’s humanitarian efforts, two anonymous donations were received from Murphy residents for which Jennifer and Randal Davis are most grateful. When Jennifer returns from Ivanovo at the end of January, she will share her experiences and photos with us in a follow-up story in the Messenger.

December, 2006 Exceptional Customer Service Provider - Abraham (Abe) Garza Kwik Kar - Murphy

I had a great experience at Kwik Kar the other day. I had looked at the wrong sticker on my windshield and thought my vehicle was due for an annual inspection. I also had my new registration sticker with me; thinking I could get both stickers put on at the same time. Abe was the service rep who came out to greet me and he explained that since my vehicle was new in 2006, it wasn’t due until 2008 for an inspection. He tactfully pointed out that next year’s date appeared on the inspection sticker to remind me. He saw that I had my registration sticker in my hand, and asked if I would like him to change out the stickers. He didn’t have to offer. He could have just chalked me up as an idiot for not being able to read the big 1-8 on the inspection sticker, and gone back to doing something else. But he didn’t. He cheerfully provided a service, free of charge, to a (returning) customer. Abe has been at Kwik Kar for one year and really likes working on cars. It’s obvious he also enjoys helping customers. The experience with Abe prompted this new feature in the Messenger. I know there are others out there with the same work ethic. Please tell us who is demonstrating Exceptional Customer Service in Murphy! Marcia Jowers

Terri (Teresita) Callahan to Take the Oath of U.S. Citizenship

If you shop at Walgreen’s on FM 544 and N. Murphy Road, no doubt you recognize Terri Callahan in the picture. Terri has worked in the Murphy store for six years where she is currently the Cosmetics Department Supervisor. Terri was born in Manila, Philippines. She lived and worked in both Hong Kong and Sidney, Australia before coming to the United States. And what brought her to Texas? Or should we say: Who brought her to Texas? It was in fact a long distance romance and ultimate marriage 9 years ago to Rondey Callahan, Murphy Exchange Club President- Elect. Terri spent many days studying for her U.S. Citizenship test, which she passed successfully, and completing the piles of required paperwork. Terri was widowed in 1981 so after she and Rondey married, Terri’s son and a daughter from her first marriage also came to the U.S. To make Terri’s swearing-in ceremony even more special, on January 9th in Arlington, Terri and her son will take the oath of U.S. citizenship together. During Terri’s time at Walgreen’s she has been instrumental in several arrests made by the Murphy Police Department. Once when she was working at the pharmacy drive-thru window she was asked to detain (or “entertain” as Terri calls it) a prescription fraud criminal until the police could arrive and make the arrest. Another time it was her keen instinct at the cash register that alerted police to a credit card and I.D. fraud ring operating in the area. All three of the arrested and convicted individuals are currently serving lengthy sentences in prison.Terri Callahan: Crime fighter and soon to be U.S. Citizen. Welcome to the United States of America, Terri!

Since Eric immensely enjoys his big water tub, Vicky decided one way or another she would find a way to get Eric and his tiger friends their own swimming pool in the playground area. Thanks to an In-Sync fundraising effort, a very generous donation from an anonymous source and Mesa Pools of Wylie, you can almost hear the splashing and feel the spray of water from frolicking tigers.
On Tuesday, December 19th, the Woodbridge Golf Club Pavilion was a buzz with laughter and good cheer when members were treated to a program delivered by Bryan Dodge, Bryan Dodge Development, Inc. Bryan will reprimand you if you call him a “motivational speaker,” but he has been billed as a trainer, consultant, key note speaker and author. All RR home owners were invited to turn on their porch lights to indicate they would like the carolers to stop and sing at their house. The weather was pleasant (a little too warm for Santa who was dressed for caroling in the North Pole); the voices and trumpets melodious and the mood joyful for this wonderful neighborhood event.
Cold weather didn’t seem to be a factor for the hundreds of Murphy residents who turned out Saturday evening for the City’s annual tree lighting ceremony at City Hall. The well-planned event had something to offer everyone who attended. Outside, City Manager Craig Sherwood opened the evening’s festivities by welcoming residents to the city’s signature tree lighting. The Murphy Middle School orchestra, set up close to the huge Christmas tree, gave a superb performance of Christmas music in spite of cold fingers and instruments. The Murphy Middle School Choir also performed and warmed the crowd with their rich tones.Up the walkway to a warm and welcoming City Hall, Starbucks’ representatives dispensed complementary coffee and hot chocolate. Other stations along the walkway were manned by a variety of service organizations and of course the Murphy Messenger. We are invited to take a walk through her complex mind of plot twists and turns to meet The Unexpected Guest, her most critically acclaimed stage play of all time, which is currently performing at the Granville Arts Center in Garland. As the lights come up and the music swells, we are transported back in time to the lavish main hall of an antebellum estate. It’s 1938 Savannah, Georgia… a sultry summer evening, and we see the body of a man sitting in his wheelchair – a bullet through the head. Next to him stands a woman holding a gun, but is she truly the murderer? Please read on . . .Pictured are Renee Krapff as Laura Warwick & Michael Wiseman as Michael Starkwedder

June "Classic" Yard of the Month Winner - 147 Westwood in The Timbers

The yard of Anna and Miguel Calderon, 147 Westwood, has been voted the Classic Gardens/Murphy Messenger June Yard of the Month. There were ten yards nominated this month; the Calderon’s yard nominated by Suzi Zimmerman, a neighbor who enjoys walking by the colorful and artistic display. Anna Calderon designed the landscaping plan and did the planting herself with the “heavier jobs” done by her husband, Miguel. The photo does not show all of the beautiful flowers and shrubs in this yard, so please take a drive-by look and see why this yard was voted June’s winner. Pictured are Don Tafelski, Classic Gardens, who presented a $50 gift certificate to Mrs. Calderon, Omar age 9, Kayla age 4 and Mrs. Anna Calderon. CONGRATULATIONS! Please send in your nominations for July Yard of the Month before Saturday July, 15th. You may email your nominations to marcia@murphymessenger.com.
