Beyond the Concrete

By Karen Chaney The annual Murphy State of the Parks Tour was held November 19th. Attending this event were seven members of the Parks board, seven members of the 4B board, City council representatives and Kim Lenoir, Director of Parks and Public Works. In previous years the tour went to each Murphy Park but this year the group focused on three exciting projects. Timbers Nature Preserve Park (Bunny Run), which is connected to City Park in The Timbers neighborhood, was one stop on the tour where future building plans were discussed. Another stop was a tour of the Murphy Community Center, slated to open its door in the spring of 2012. Rounding out the tour was a hike down by Maxwell Creek at the Preserve at Maxwell Creek Trails which is located behind Kimbrough Stadium and Murphy Middle School. Murphy resident and City Council member Dennis Richmond provided an onsite status report of the Preserve at Maxwell Creek. This past summer his Wylie based company RiverValley Eco Services became Friends of the Parks and undertook the goal of making the preserve “look like it was intended (to look).” Richmond said that he wants to make the signs that list what is growing there a reality. A five foot apron of Buffalo grass and Blue grama surround the interior of the walkway which is intended to have short vertical growth leading into the area’s center of native Blackland prairie mix. Bluebonnets and other wildflowers have been planted and are starting to pop their heads out of the soil (note: this might be a good place to check out in the spring for bluebonnet photos). The drought experienced this past summer was tough on germination; Richmond anticipates replanting a portion of the grass and flowers. Even though an irrigation system is in place at the Preserve at Maxwell Creek, Richmond states that is a poor substitute for rain. In addition to the drought obstacle, Richmond and his team fought a battle with Bermuda grass. Richmond enjoys sharing his knowledge of native grasses and flowers coupled with the manpower to enhance the beauty of Murphy’s parks. Accompanying the growing Blackland prairie grass area is another successful Murphy resident volunteer project. Parks board member Brian Jones pioneered a trail that would allow closer access to Maxwell Creek. Growing up in Pennsylvania and Colorado, Jones fondly recalls childhood nature hikes. He has three children and wanted a nearby place to go hiking with them. Seeing the potential that Maxwell Creek offers he approached Kim Lenoir and the parks board with his dream and was given the go ahead. Jones, with the help of Richmond and members from Richmond’s church The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Plano Fifth Ward, cut a trail that leads to an adventurous nature walk. Arriving at the Preserve at Maxwell Creek Trails you will find plenty of concrete parking, listening you will hear quite a bit of traffic noise travelling along Murphy Road. However, traverse this new trail into the preserve, down by the creek and your audible senses will be steeped in rustling leaves, flowing water and bird song. Visually enjoy the lack of concrete and abundance of nature. This is a great place to explore, jump the creek and explore some more. (Note: wear rain boots if you have them and bring newspaper to place your boots on when you return to your car.) Looking into 2012, Kim Lenoir enthusiastically points out that Murphy Central Park will begin bidding in the spring, park trails are continually being expanded to connect to each other and Liberty Ridge Park in Rolling Ridge will undergo improvements. The revisions are slated to begin in January with a three month estimated completion time. Included in the change are a new pavilion, larger playground, a grade down to the water’s edge and the addition of a fishing pier. (Liberty Ridge Park is located at 201 Rolling Ridge.)

Neighborhood revitalization program being considered

By Laura Swift The Murphy 4B Community Development Corporation has an abundance of projects in the works. Next on the list will be setting up the newly purchased Christmas tree in City Hall. “The Christmas tree is 30.5 feet tall and will be built in-house each year,” said Kristen Roberts, director of economic and community development. The new tree will be the center of attention during the city’s annual Christmas in the Park celebration, which will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Dec. 1 at City Hall. The community tree lighting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks are planned to start at 7:45 p.m. Residents can take pictures with Santa, see live reindeer, and take family photos in the “ginormous” winter snow globe, Roberts said. Another project on the horizon is establishing a neighborhood revitalization awards program. 4B Vice President Eric Hemphill said he has been interested in starting a neighborhood revitalization program in Murphy for quite some time. “We could model the program off Richardson’s neighborhood vitality award program,” Hemphill said. “We could put a sign in the yard/front of the [structure], place an ad of the winner in the newspaper, and give winners a gift card. This would allow us to provide recognition for beautifying the city.” The program would apply to both business and residential establishments, Hemphill said. The city of Richardson started its neighborhood revitalization program in 1994 with the goal of recognizing property owners who made significant exterior improvements to their properties, and encouraging future individual reinvestments in the community. Revitalization projects include making improvements to properties or structures that halt or reverse building decline, ongoing maintenance and refurbishment of structures and properties, and total redevelopment of a property or structure. Replacing buildings and facades, landscaping, replacing/adding exterior lighting and updating/installing exterior signage are a few examples of revitalization projects. The Board directed city staff to research the city of Richardson’s neighborhood revitalization program and bring back information for the January 2012 meeting. Additional 4B projects under development include park signage that will be placed throughout the city. Thirty signs that display park directions were recently delivered to the city and will be installed within a month, Roberts said. “I’m really excited to see these signs go up,” said Boardmember Katie Westhora. Playground equipment for Brentwood Park is expected to be delivered to the city this month. Projects included in the fiscal year 2011-2012 budget include securing price quotes for seating at Aviary and North Hill parks and adding trees and landscape beds at North Hill Park. The Board plans to conduct its next meeting in January 2012.

‘More than a kernel of truth in that’ vow officials Kids of all ages, but especially real ones, will be entertained virtually beyond measure at the 2011 Maize Days event on Sept. 24 as officials of the community-wide celebration bring back the highly popular Kid Zone area, according to Kristen Roberts, Community and Economic Development Director. “This year’s Kid Zone will occupy about 175,000 square feet of space, that’s just over four acres of all sorts of fun and excitement,” she said. The Kid Zone will feature several bounce houses, where shoeless kids can romp and play to their heart’s content. Younger kids will also enjoy face-painting, temporary tattoos, candy art, hay play and pony rides. Older kids will be attracted to a rock-climbing wall, hamster balls and a zip line. Also drawing the slightly older set will be the Euro bungee Quad Pod Extreme, a controlled jump and bounce using trampolines and tie lines that allow participant to experience a bungee-like jump without climbing. And, a mobile video game theater will roll in, giving gamers a chance to test their skills. Kids in all age groups will be fascinated by the Rad Hatter, a hands-on exhibit that allows people to make customized, wearable hats utilizing new and creative ways of working with recycled materials. “The Kid Zone will be a real beehive of activity, a center of fun, action and unbelievable feats of entertainment,” added Roberts. Maize Days is set for Saturday, Sept. 24 on the Municipal Complex grounds, 206 North Murphy Road starting with the A-Maize-ing 5K and Fun Run at 8 a.m. The vendor booths and Kid Zone open at 10 a.m. and run continuously until 8 p.m. Maize Days ends with a massive fireworks display starting at 8:15 p.m.

Maize Days planners seeking vendors and volunteers

Maize Market among the most popular attractions at fun festArtisans, crafts persons, home-based businesses, retail merchants, gift makers and service providers are cordially invited to be part of the popular Maize Market during the annual Maize Days celebration on the grounds of the Murphy Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road on Sept. 24, according to Kristen Roberts, Director of Economic and Community Development for the City of Murphy.“Maize Market is always a big draw at Maize Days because of the variety and scope of vendors. Many vendors have expressed their extreme satisfaction with it as well, since their products and services are exposed to several thousand people in a matter of several hours,” she said.Especially welcome are vendors with unique and one-of-a-kind items and services, vendors who display and sell hand-crafted objects, jewelry, candles as well as vendors who are local to the area.“Visitors to Maize Days are always anxious to see and buy new and different items for gift-giving, Christmas presents, and other special occasions,” she added.Arts and craft and other vendors and service providers have until Aug. 1 to take advantage of an Early Bird discount. Booths are available in two standard sizes.Maize Market also has a limited number of non-profit vendor spaces, rented at a discount, for local and area groups and organizations. Non-profit booths are available in only one size.Booths in all categories will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must be submitted online by vendors in order to be considered. In addition to vendors, the Maize Days planners are also looking for volunteers to assist with various aspects of the event. And, of course, we can’t possibly put this on without our valuable volunteers,” concluded Roberts.

Annual Murphy community fall festival approaching

Murphy Maize Days begins solicitation of sponsors and vendors MURPHY (June 1, 2011) Grab your red pen and place a big circle around September 24, 2011. That’s the day the annual Murphy Maize Days celebration and A’Maize-ing 5K/Fun Run make their return engagement, according to Kristen Roberts, the City of Murphy’s Economic Development Manager. “Last year’s rain-out of the festival was a disappointment for many people. And even though the rain made the cancellation unavoidable, people began making plans for the 2011 version that very day,” she said. Murphy Maize Days takes over a 30-acre portion of the park area around the Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road. The Fun Run opens the day at 8 a.m. and Murphy Maize Days runs from 10 a.m. to its conclusion at 8:30 p.m. with what has been called the best fireworks display in Collin County. There is no entry fee, although food, drink and craft vendors will be accepting cash for their merchandise. Since it was established, Murphy Maize Days has been a source of extreme pride for the community and provides an opportunity for the entire City to unite behind one major event. “The event draws people from the City, of course, but it has also become a destination festival for people from surrounding communities. In fact, attendance has doubled each year with over 3,000 attendees in 2009,” she said. More information will be forthcoming, but vendors and sponsors wishing to be part of the festivities are encouraged to visit www.murphymaizedays.com or contact Kristen Roberts at (972) 468-4006 or kroberts@murphytx.org.

Picnic by the Pond returns for another fun season

Friday evening music series present varied entertainment lineup MURPHY (May 31, 2011) For the first three Friday evenings in June, the Picnic by the Pond music series will entertain visitors with three very different genres of music and entertainment. The one constant, however, is the heaping helping of foot-stomping fun that participants are sure to have, according to Recreation Coordinator Keri Kirkwood. “The picnics are all free and open to the public, with parking available at the Municipal Complex. Families are most cordially invited since the entertainment is oriented toward the widest audience imaginable,” she said. The series is held in the pond area in front of the Murphy Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road, and the entertainment runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., although families and individuals should plan to arrive in time to get favorable seating. Lawn chairs, blankets and seating pads are encouraged. Picnic baskets may be brought, but glass containers are not allowed, and the public display of alcohol is discouraged. “Parents should also keep tabs on their children since the pond is accessible to curious youngsters,” said Kirkwood. Opening the series on June 3 is “Radiant Fallout,” a worship band from Wylie. According to their web site, the band members “believe that God has brought us together for the purpose of impacting the hearts of believers and sharing the Gospel to seekers through modern worship music.” The members of Radiant Fallout represent three different churches where they are involved in the music and youth ministries. The band chose the name “Radiant Fallout” because they see themselves as “the fallout left to impact the world for Jesus Christ after his birth, death, and resurrection.” Members include Matt Foster, Shane Salinas, Robert Watson, Lyle Samples and Daniel Weyandt. On Friday, June 10, Murphy-based “Hard Country” took the stage. Influenced by country music, rock and blues, the band’s original music is rock-tinged country influenced by artists such as Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly, Jack Ingram, Randy Rogers Band, Charlie Robison, Pat Green, Cory Morrow, George Strait and Dwight Yoakum as well as various rock influences. Closing out the 2011 version of Picnic by the Pond is David Chicken, described as part superhero, part Elvis, and 100% fun for all ages. This singer-songwriter leads the audience through a high-energy, interactive performance filled with creative movement, motivational messages, and general hilarity based on his original music. An Emmy award winner, David Chicken invites members of the audience on stage to sing, play musical instruments and become stars. David is joined on the stage by “Super Chachie” a superhero Chihuahua, who does amazing tricks. The show concludes with a group lesson on the new dance craze, the Scakle. “There are no contingency plans for rain or inclement weather,” concluded Kirkwood. The series is presented by the Murphy Parks and Recreation Department. For more information, call (972) 468-4000.

MURPHY (May 19, 2011) The imminent threat of inclement weather has resulted in a change in venue for the May 20 Moonlight Movie from North Hill Park to the Murphy Activity Center, 201 North Murphy Road, across the street from the Murphy Municipal Complex, according to Recreation Coordinator Keri Kirkwood.“The MAC will be the host site for the movie, now starting at 8:30 p.m. And, instead of lawn chairs, we’ll ask people to sit on the open floor, so blankets, pillows and stadium pads would be more appropriate,” she said. The feature on Friday is the animated comedy “Despicable Me.”Popcorn will be distributed free of charge, and the Police Explorer Post is scheduled to have soft drinks for sale. Nevertheless, moviegoers may bring their own goodies and non-alcoholic beverages. The movie is free and open to the public. Limited parking is available at the site; however, there is ample parking at City Hall.
Murphy Police Explorer Post gains statewide honors

By Karen ChaneyThe Murphy Police Explorers (MPS), under the direction of Sgt. Jim Hermes, earned numerous awards from the 2011 State Competition held in Justin, TX on April 2nd. Eleven Explorers represented Murphy in three events. There were 96 Explorer teams competing at this annual event. There are approximately 20 events that each team prepares for all year. The teams do not know which event they will be competing in until they are at the competition. The Murphy team’s three events were, Officer Down, Crime Prevention and Accident Investigation. In the Officer Down event the Murphy team received 2nd place. They were judged on their first aid skills, calling for medics, officer safety and talking with the victims. In the crime prevention event the Murphy team brought home 3rd place. This contest consisted of presenting a prepared speech in front of a panel in which they had to illustrate how to prevent a certain crime in a neighborhood. Murphy received 3rd place in the Accident Investigation event. During this event the participants were taken to the parking lot where they were faced with a two car collision scenario. There were actors representing the crash victims and witnesses. The judges critiqued their interaction and problem solving skills. This year MPE Captain Shaun Joynt, was chosen to go to the U.S. Marshals Service Leadership Academy. Only 25 Explorers are chosen from across the nation. Capt. Joynt has been a member of the MPE for five years. He is a graduate of Wylie High School. He is currently working full time as well as attending the University of Phoenix online. Joynt recommends joining the MPE to everyone. He says that this experience has taken him from a shy teen, lacking in self-confidence, to someone who enjoys talking to others. His career goals are focused on federal or local law enforcement.Since 2005 the Murphy Police Explorers has taken a group to the State Competition. Every year they return victorious. To join the MPE an applicant must be 14 (completed 8th grade) - 20 years old. An explorer must pass a criminal background check, be of good moral and ethical standing and pass a peer led (advisor supervised), oral panel interview. Sgt. Hermes requests that candidates interested in the program attend 4 meetings to show their commitment level as well as give applicants a clear understanding of what the Police Explorers encompass. PLEASE NOTE:The Murphy Police Explorers are holding a fund raising yard sale from 8:00 am to 12:00pm on May 21st. The sale will be held at 206 N. Murphy Road (City Hall). If you would like to donate items to the sale please call Sgt. Hermes at 972-468-4208 to arrange a drop off time

Murphy 'Christmas in the Park' set for December 2

Fireworks display adds festive air to annual eventMURPHY (November 17, 2010) For the third year in a row, the City of Murphy cordially invites residents to participate in its community Christmas Tree Lighting and holiday spectacular, this year christened “Christmas in the Park,” according to Keri Kirkwood, Community Recreation Coordinator for the City of Murphy. The free celebration is set for Thursday, December 2, starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending with the grand finale fireworks display at 8:15 p.m. The fireworks display is a one-time addition to the event, resulting from the rained-out Maize Day event. Site of the event is the Murphy Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road. “Plans call for the grounds surrounding the complex to be transformed into a winter wonderland, hopefully encouraging participants to get into the holiday spirit,” said Ms. Kirkwood.Because of the growth in the event and the addition of the fireworks display, event planners have added alternate parking options for revelers. “The crowds continue to grow every year, so for the convenience of guests, parking at the Municipal Complex will be limited. The City is providing shuttle buses and vans from the parking lots at Tom Kimbrough Stadium and Murphy Marketplace starting at 5 p.m. and running continuously until 9 p.m. The public is highly encouraged to park at one of these locations,” she added. While admission is free, attendees are asked to bring a new unwrapped toy to help kick off Murphy’s Holiday Toy Drive for Collin County Children's Advocacy Center. And, vendors will be accepting cash for food and drink purchases. Unlike previous years, there will be no complimentary food or drinks.Photos with Santa Claus and live reindeer, a craft workshop for children and plenty of food and beverages are all part of the celebration. Area school choirs will be singing cherished holiday songs and carols as attendees enjoy the evening’s festivities.“The grand finale is extremely exciting. A spectacular fireworks show choreographed to holiday music will close the program and get everyone in a celebratory mood,” she said. The events and activities are scheduled to be held under cover of sturdy, weather-resistant tents and tarps, and some of the event’s activities are scheduled for indoor venues, making Christmas in the Park a rain or shine event. However, inclement weather may affect the fireworks display, since a heavy downpour would have the potential of moistening the powder used to launch the fireworks.More information on “Christmas in the Park” is available by visiting www.murphytx.org; by calling Customer Service at (972) 468-4100; or by e-mail to Keri Kirkwood at kkirkwood@murphytx.org or Kim Lenoir at klenoir@murphytx.org.

Three Town Hall Meetings set for park plan updates

Focus on Community Center, Liberty Ridge, Bunny RunMURPHY (November 9, 2010) Residents will have three opportunities in the coming weeks to weigh in on the progress of plans to develop parks in Murphy that are now in different stages of design, according to Community Services Manager Kim Lenoir. The three parcels of parkland are the Murphy Community Center, Liberty Ridge Park, and the area known as Bunny Run, City Park and Kinney Road Park. Public presentation of reports from the two architectural firms working on the projects will include: the meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board, set for Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m.; the Murphy Community Development Corporation meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m.; and the regular meeting of the Murphy City Council on Monday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. Each of the three meetings will be held at the Council Chambers within the City Hall complex, 206 North Murphy Road. The Murphy Community Center, situated in the former Murphy School Building across North Murphy Road from the City Municipal Complex, is being renovated under plans drawn up by WHR Architects, while Liberty Ridge and Bunny Run are under design by HOK Landscape Architects. Both firms have submitted presentations and staff will be available to answer questions at all three meetings.“Last May and June, citizens gave us ideas for development and restoration of the old Murphy School Building. Those ideas gave birth to plans that are now in their final stages, and we’d like for citizens to see and comment on them,” she said. With the Community Center, Murphy has an opportunity to create a link between its historic past and its evolving future. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has determined that the building was constructed in 1938 and is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under the criterion for social history and architecture. THC assisted the city with design options that served to maintain the historical integrity of the building, believed to be only remaining historical building in Murphy. The Community Center is a $2.5 million project that was widely supported by the citizens of Murphy in the 2008 Bond election and ranked first in the State for a Texas Parks and Wildlife Indoor matching grant of $750,000.“To enhance the experience at the Community Center, the city is seeking historical pictures of the building, or photos of students and teachers who either attended or taught at the old elementary and high schools. We’ll make copies of any pictures the citizens bring to City Hall, and return the originals,” she added.Public input is also being sought for the redevelopment plans for Liberty Ridge Park and the Bunny Run property. HOK Landscape Architects hosted an initial public exchange on these projects in September. Design concepts are set for unveiling at the three meetings. For more information about the Murphy Community Center, Liberty Ridge Park and the Bunny Run, City Park, Kinney Road parcel, residents are encouraged to visit www.murphytx.org, attend any of the Town Hall Meetings, or contact Kim Lenoir, Community Services Manager, at (972) 468-4068 or klenoir@murphytx.org.Progress reports on the 2008 Bond program are also available on the city website.

Community events committee prepares for Maize Days

By Alexandra PedriniMaize Days was the topic of the August 12 Community Events committee meeting. The group spent over two hours hammering out details of the September 25 event. The committee plans to bring a variety of events to the festival for adults and children of all ages. The first event of the day will be the Murphy Maize Days A-Maize-ing 5K Run at 8:15 a.m. The largest part of the event will be the kids’ zone. Over 175,000 square feet will be designed for children and teens. Attractions will include face painting, pottery painting, a rock climbing wall, a video games truck and more for free or at a small fee.“We’re going to have a rocking kid zone,” said committee member Barbra Dube. The committee chose to not have a car show at this year’s event because the show would not be located in a convenient location in relation to the festival. Even with shuttles running back and forth between the potential locations of the show, this would not add to the festival other than adding something adults will be interest in going to, members said. Instead of just cutting the car show, the committee decided to approach car dealerships to ask if they would display some of their new cars. This will still give adults a chance to look at cars, but the city will not be out $600 for fees and trophies. Maize Days will also feature Karaoke Corn Idol, corn spitting and scarecrow decorating contests, and a corn cook-off with cash prizes awarded to winners. The committee will be getting a bin from the North Texas Food Bank and will be accepting canned food donations before and during the event. Various venders will be selling food and goods at the festival. The committee said they are still accepting applications for venders. For festival-goers’ entertainment, bands Hard Country, Zane Williams and Eleven Hundred Springs will perform at 3 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. respectively.
Murphy Messenger Travels the Globe

Many thanks to all of our readers who sent us their summer vacation photos of the Murphy Messenger in unique, funny and faraway places. This year it was extremely difficult to select winners since many had us laughing and/or totally amazed! The scenery was beautiful and the ingenuity was remarkable. I know that UPS Store customers enjoyed the display of photos in the store as it was always fun to go by and see who had gone where this summer. The Messenger awarded $50 for the photo taken the Farthest Distance from Murphy. This year’s winner, Gerard Goh, visited Singapore with his family and traveled 9,722 miles to get there. The Funniest Photo $50 award went to the Hartman family. Sarah, Rachel, Victoria, Eric Jr. and mom and dad went to Disney World where they shared their copy of the Messenger with Snow White. The Most Unique setting was declared as Ms. Mary Jeanne Higbee’s photo of a copy of the Messenger parasailing with her! Ms. Higbee received a $50 award.Judges had no specific category for the fourth award, but they felt it deserved at the very least an Honorable Mention. Stacy Kerr’s photo with her granddad (and the Messenger) on Normandy Beach, where he had landed as a soldier so many years ago, was also chosen a winner. Stacy received a $20 award. Our contest rules clearly stated no “superimposed” photos so we never printed this submitted photo from Rick Stephens. But we thought we would give him his 15 sec. of fame in this issue. The picture is truly out of this world. Thanks to everyone who shared their photos with us!

Tis the Season!

Saturday evening’s balmy temperatures were definitely not a repeat of last year’s Murphy Tree Lighting Ceremony. The incredibly pleasant weather allowed many to attend wearing shorts and flip flops while whispering in Santa’s ear what they wanted to find under their own trees this year. Santa arrived by fire engine and made his way through the crowd to the beautiful tree where Mayor Baldwin just moments before had greeted attendees and where several choirs sang Christmas music. For two hours families enjoyed another successful City event with friends and neighbors!

Classic Gardens & Landscape and the Murphy Messenger will once again host a Pumpkin Decorating and Costume Contest with tours through the Haunted Greenhouses. This year’s event will be on Saturday, October 27th, 10 a.m. until 12 noon at Classic Gardens on FM 544 in Murphy next to Hobert Pools. Don Tafelski, Classic Gardens owner, has ordered a large quantity of pumpkins for this year’s event. You may buy your pumpkin in advance and save your receipt, or you may purchase your pumpkin the day of the decorating contest. Please bring your own carving and decorating supplies/materials with you on the 27th. Tables will be set up by 10 a.m. when carvers and decorators may begin demonstrating their creativity. Shelly Ferrell, Classic Gardens employee, is excited about the haunted greenhouses and is planning a few new surprises that visitors will find lurking among the plants and shrubs beginning at 11 a.m.! While the parade of costumes moves through the greenhouses, judges will be choosing winners by age group. Sonic Drive-In and Albertson’s will once again be an important part of the fun and excitement. There will be prizes and free candy, too. Plan to bring the family and join in the fun. The greenhouses are not super scary and of course the tours are done in daylight surroundings.

MURPHY PREPARES FOR 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION BY ESTABLISHING VOLUNTEER PROGRAM FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

The City of Murphy Public Events Advisory Committee is putting a call out for all citizens and community groups to volunteer for future city events, including next year’s milestone 50th anniversary of the city’s charter. Formed in September 2006, the committee is charged with increasing and expanding events provided by the city. Recognizing that growth in city-sponsored events cannot be supported solely by existing volunteer city boards and salaried city workers, the committee began devising a method of increasing the number of volunteers available to staff city events. The city will open volunteer opportunities to the entire community with an easy-to-complete application form available on the Murphy website. The application includes a simple questionnaire about volunteer areas of interest and expertise. Community groups may use the same application. The formal volunteer program will be established using the resulting database providing the perfect match between volunteer and project. Orientation sessions and volunteer training will be staffed by skilled volunteers, and volunteer recognition programs are in the planning stages. Mayor Bret Baldwin has thrown his full support behind the committee’s effort stating, “This volunteer organizing effort is a great thing for the city and should be expanded to benefit all city programs.” Assistant City Manager Jeff Bickerstaff encourages Scouts, Home Owners Associations, church groups and other community groups to apply and participate. “Student groups such as National Honor Society and others are welcome,” he says. “We’ll even provide a record of community service hours worked to those individuals requesting them.” According to committee chair Natalie Montgomery, “Upcoming events provide the perfect opportunity for Murphy citizens to get involved, especially as the city celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008. We’ve been told that next year’s celebration should ‘put Murphy’s Fall Festival on the map!’” The volunteer application form can be found on the city’s home page at www.murphytx.org. Interested volunteers can print out the application online and return it to City Hall by mail, fax or simply dropping the form at the front reception desk. Mailing address and fax number can be found on the first page of the application. For additional information about how to volunteer, please contact Peggy Murphy at 214-356-1335 or email at phmurph@aol.com.

You swim, you bike, you run—all in the same day and one right after the other with no resting in between. It’s grueling and exhausting. Just ask Murphy resident Max Barron, who recently returned from competing in the Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid Triathlon held July 22nd in the Adirondacks of New York State.A competitive swimmer in high school and college, Max was confident he would do well in the Ironman’s 2.4 mile swim. For the past six months Max had trained in Lake Lavon and the Lifetime Fitness lap pool, pushing himself to better his times. He was ready to take on the 2200 other competitors who may or may not be strong swimmers. His bicycle, a Colnago Titanio, had been taken on many training rides in preparation for the Ironman 112-mile bike event. Often pedaling to Oklahoma to conquer some mountainous terrain, on weekends Max would jump on his bike at 4:30 am. and not roll home until late afternoon. Max , on a daily schedule, would stretch out his long legs and pound his feet onto various surfaces doing his running training either before or after a rigorous swim or bicycle ride. His feet were as determined as his spirit to complete the 26.2 mile run at Lake Placid that was the final of the three events.Click on "Full Story"

Newest Entries in the Summer Vacation Photo Contest

Where is Friar Tuck? The photo was taken at Major Oak in Sherwood Forest in Nottingham, England. Major Oak is a tree that is over 700 years old that Robin Hood used to sleep in/on. Pretty impressive tree that is being held up by stilts to help keep it from collapsing and stay alive. The history behind the tree is extremely interesting. The distance from Murphy to Nottingham, England is 4,656 miles. "In the photo is Caryn, Chris, William and Jonathan Rooke with our favorite local paper, The Murphy Messenger!" On a huge sign The Great Wall tells everyone that the theme of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics is "One World, One Dream." Dongjie Cheng visited the Great Wall with the Murphy Messenger on July 16, 2007. The Great Wall looked more majestic than in the photo when I stood on it. I was really sweaty but excited after climbing to a high point. Local people challenge visitors with Chairman Mao's famous words, "You are not a hero yet before you get on the Great Wall." Distance from Murphy: 6987.9 miles A Tisket a Tasket, What’s inside the Longaberger Basket/Building? Elizabeth McCormick is pictured in front of The Longaberger Company headquarters building in Newark, Ohio (with the Messenger). The building is 7 Stories tall and weighs 9000 tons. The handles weigh 150 tons and are heated to prevent ice from forming. The 2 Longaberger tags are attached to the sides of the building. The gold leaf painted tags are 725 lbs each and measure 25 feet long! When Dave Longaberger (founder) took this idea to the architects- he was told it couldn't be done. His response? If they can put a man on the moon, they can certainly build a building that's shaped like a basket." The building has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, People magazine, Time magazine and US News and World Report. The Acuna family visited The Badlands in South Dakota and also added their faces to this picture of Mt. Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota! Maybe a future President Isabelle, Alexander or Sophie to carve into the side of the mountain? Florence Abubaker traveled to Jordan to visit relatives in Amman following a stop in France. Then they traveled to Petra that is the most unusual of places, since it was newly added to the list of world wonders. Pictured is son, Sam, and family members. Distance to Petra, Jordan from Murphy 7070.1 miles. Tanya Paul, back from India, 9382.7 miles from Murphy, traveled to Kochi, Kerala (southernmost tip of India) and the Messenger went with her. It was a 2-1/2 day journey by plane. The Kothamangalam Church is historical church in Kerala, which was built in the early 1600's and it's still standing strong! Samantha and Alex Chopp visited the Herrenchiemsee Palace, located on the "Herreninsel", an island in the middle of the Chiemsee, one of Bavaria's largest lakes, 60 km south east of Munich, Germany. It is the biggest palace built by "King Ludwig II of Bavaria", built between 1878 and 1885. The palace is full scale replica of King Louis XIV's "Palace of Versailles", France, which was meant to oudo its predecessor in scale and opulence. But the palace was never finished once the king ran out of money, and Ludwig lived there for only 10 days before his mysterious death.

Mary Zumwalt is going to Las Vegas in November to represent the state of Texas at the Ms. Senior America Pageant! Competing in Dallas on Saturday, August 11th, against 21 contestants from around the state, Mary walked away with the crown and honor of being named Ms. Senior Texas 2007. Contestants were judged on their philosophy of life, talent, evening gown presentation and their interviews with the judges. For the talent portion of the competition, Mary performed an original piano piece that she composed and arranged. Mary has been playing piano since the age of 3, both reading music and playing by ear, which she says is a truly God given gift. Mary uses her piano talents at Murphy Road Baptist Church, the Plano Senior Citizens Center and for her friends’ enjoyment. We wish Ms. Senior Texas 2007, Mary Zumwalt, the very best of luck when she represents Murphy and Texas in the National pageant. Mary is married to Jack Zumwalt and they are Murphy residents.

The hot dogs were cooking, the pizzas were delivered, and multiple frozen desserts were judged and thoroughly enjoyed by Police and Fire Department personnel! Regardless of the size of the block party, police officers, Explorers and fire fighters made their way around Murphy Tuesday night to visit with citizens, which is the purpose of National Night Out. Much to the delight of the children, and one “pretend casualty” who couldn’t resist trying out the new ambulance, the fire trucks, emergency vehicles and police cars had their doors wide open for close-up inspection.
MOO!

Parker resident, Joe Katin, owns the vacant property in between Sonic and Kwik Kar on FM 544 in Murphy. While Mr. Katin originally hoped to develop a retail shopping center with a national chain fitness center on the land, you might have noticed that the property is looking more and more like a scene from Bonanza. (That dates me I know.) Preparations are being made to place cows on the land while zoning details are worked out with the City of Murphy. The Messenger contacted Mr. Katin’s Plano attorney, Mike A. Thomas, who provided the following statement: “Murphy Plaza, LLC has been utilizing substantial resources in the protracted and difficult process of going to the Murphy Planning and Zoning Commission multiple times to get our tenant, LA Fitness, as well as other retail development on our site, approved. It is our impression that we will be faced with similar processes to obtain final approval from the Murphy City Council. In the meantime, Murphy Plaza, LLC is utilizing the property for its presently approved use, that of raising cattle. That is the only comment we have at this time.”

CITY OF MURPHY TO SPRAY FOR MOSQUITOES

At their July 16, 2007 meeting, the Murphy City Council authorized the City Manager to enter into a contract with Omniserve Pest Management of McKinney for mosquito spraying in order to help control the mosquito population. The following schedule was approved: July• Monday, July 30: 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (south of FM 544)• Tuesday, July 31: 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (north of FM 544) August• Sunday, August 5: 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (south of FM 544)• Monday, August 6: 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (north of FM 544)• Tuesday, August 14: 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (south of FM 544)• Tuesday, August 21: 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (north of FM 544)• Tuesday, August 28: 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (south of FM 544) During spraying hours, it is recommended that residents avoid exposure by taking the following steps. • If possible, remain inside whenever spraying takes place and for about one hour after spraying.• People who suffer from chemical sensitivities or feel spraying could aggravate a preexisting health condition should take special measures to avoid exposure.• Close windows and doors when spraying is taking place in the immediate area.• Bring pets inside and cover ornamental fish ponds to avoid direct exposure. Residents can do their part to eliminate standing water and other potential mosquito breeding sites on their property. Empty water from buckets, cans, flower pots, and rain gutters that are clogged. The City of Murphy has treated standing water around the City to help reduce mosquitoes. If you have a concern about standing water, mosquitoes or would like more information about the spraying program, you may call the City of Murphy at 972-468-4000 or Omniserve Pest Management at 1-972-347-2119.
What in the heck is Geocaching??

The website: www.geocaching.com will give you a detailed explanation of this fun/educational – family/individual - recreation/hobby, but I learned about it first hand from Murphy resident, David Hawkins. When I asked David about his favorite pastime and sport, and yes, geocaching is considered a sport, he said, “If you like orienteering, a compass, being sneaky and scavenger hunts, you’ll like geocaching.” The website, mentioned above, defines geocaching as an entertaining adventure game for GPS (Global Positioning System) users. The term geocaching is formed from “geo,” the part that refers to geography, and “caching” the part that pertains to a “cache” or storage, and also means a place to hide things. That part of the game I thought might be easier until I saw how a “cache” is often disguised and hidden. “If it was a bear it could bite you,” comes to mind. Destination: Most Unusual - Independence Pass - Continental DivideWhere were you? The photo was taken on June 2 as we drove back to Texas from Aspen, Colorado. Independence Pass is one of the most dangerous roads in America. At points it is one lane with steep cliffs on one side, and sheer dropoffs on the other. (10 mph only!) The road had only been open for about a week since it takes a while to clear away snow, rocks, and tree debris from the Winter storms. It was about 45 degrees when the photo was taken and much colder with the wind! It is amazing what a change in altitude can do to the temperature! The photo is me and my daughter, Katelyn.Submitted by: Angie Buchta

Five Cougars and a Tiger Rescued by In-Sync Exotics

Vicky Keahey, Founder and President of In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center, has returned to Wylie with six (6) exotic cats from a breeding facility in Athens, TX. Over the past three years the couple who owned and operated the Athens facility had made several inquiries to In-Sync Exotics to take over the care and responsibility for their exotic cats. The owners wanted to pursue other interests and were trying to re-locate their animals. In-Sync Exotics did accept one leopard, Java, back in 2004 but was not able to accommodate additional exotics at that time. When the Athens couple called again this month to report that their house had burned to the ground (located on the grounds of the facility), and that they could no longer care for their remaining cats, In-Sync Exotics agreed to accept their five (5) cougars and one (1) tiger. The initial plan was to transport the one cougar with claws and the tiger to a New Jersey rescue where that facility would find a long-term placement for them. Unfortunately the New Jersey rescue was not successful in locating a home for the two exotic felines and now In-Sync Exotics is left with responsibility and expense to care for all six unexpected additions. To read more click on "Full Story"

The Murphy Fire Department arrived with both fire truck and new ambulance much to the delight of the children. One firefighter even lent a hand in helping launch a toy rocket. Murphy Police Sgt.
Lisa Roberts Performance HorsesMurphy, TX It seems like every other day for the past three weeks there has been a new foal gracing the paddock of Lisa Roberts’ property at the corner of McMillen Road and North Murphy Road. It’s quite a sight to drive by and see the foals lined up nursing from their moms and then later driving back by to find them all laying on mounds of hay taking a nap. If you decide to park your car and walk up to the N. Murphy Road fence, most likely you’ll be greeted somewhat cautiously by the moms and foals, followed by either a snort of approval and an outstretched neck inviting a pat or two, or flying dirt as the mom and its baby put some distance between you and them. Eight of the ten expected paint foals, all sired by the same stallion, Denali, have greeted the world healthy and with wobbly legs and skittish moves.

Katy Estill - Concludes Ten Years in Show Business (of Rabbits) - Named Youth Breeder of the Year by Texas Rabbit Breeders Assoc.

Katy Estill is resolutely in the process of selling her prize-winning rabbits to younger show-rabbit enthusiasts. It’s not because Katy is so old that she no longer can take care of the 30 or so rabbits; Katy is only 17 after all. But Katy will be graduating from Plano East High School this May and going off to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX to pursue a double major in Agriculture-Business and Agriculture-Education, and the rabbits can’t go with her. Katy began showing rabbits ten years ago when an Aunt gave her three show rabbits. Between the rabbits’ propensity to populate and the keen breeding, trading and buying skills that Katy quickly developed, the backyard barn in Murphy soon became a home to Katy’s many FFA projects. She was quick to point out that FFA no longer means you plan to be a “Future Farmer.” The premise of FFA actually teaches young people time management and responsibility of owning a project.
Chance Cranford was named after Chance McKenzie, a character played by Sam Elliott in the 1983-84 television series, The Yellow Rose. He’s not a rancher, far from it, but he does possess the rugged determination of one. Prior to September 6, 1997, Chance was an active boy who loved athletics. A freshman at Tom Bean High School, he was an “A” student and played quarterback in football and point guard in basketball. Chance was fourteen years old with unlimited opportunities on the horizon when he was injured in a hunting accident. Chance woke up three weeks later in Parkland Hospital with most of his face gone, including his sight. For two years he couldn’t put anything in his mouth, no water, no food—nothing. He was fed through tubes. But his attitude was good, and he attributes his miraculous rehabilitation to his wonderful mom, dad, family and friends. In spite of his new challenges he never lost his self confidence. To read more about Chance, click "Full Story"

Along with the Easter baskets, winter coats had to be dragged out for the Saturday morning Egg Hunt at Liberty Ridge Park in Rolling Ridge. It wasn’t just cold, it was snowing! The best hand-warmers were the Moebius’ two dogs that didn’t seem to mind the extra attention. The flurries didn’t put a freeze on the enthusiasm though - children bounced in two bounce houses and then scattered to collect eggs and return to the prize table for special gifts.
Cars Lined up at the Pumps to Take Advantage of Gas Buy Down - 25 cents off per gallon compliments of the Springs Church

The pumps opened at 11 a.m. for the Gas Buy Down sponsored by the Springs Church, a new Murphy church led by Pastor Joel Halprin. The pastor and members were easily identifiable in their red shirts as they greeted drivers, directed traffic, held signage roadside and assisted customers at the pumps. All the while with a smile on their faces. The Exxon store manager changed the prices on the marquee to reflect the 25 cents off per gallon. Instead of paying $2.40 per gallon for regular gas, those who came early only had to pay $2.15 – The Springs paid the remaining 25 cents per gallon. All three grades of gas were discounted until a total of 4000 gallons of gas had been pumped. It was no surprise that the line to the pumps often extended into the McDonald’s parking lot but everyone remained congenial and didn’t seem to mind the wait. What a great way for a new church to make friends in a community--fast! The Springs meets at Boggess Elementary School, 225 Glen Ridge Drive.

If you would have asked In-Sync’s founder and President, Vicky Keahey, Friday night if she thought the Egg Hunt might end up as an aquatics event, she probably would have taken that bet. But all turned out well on Saturday when the rain moved on and sun came out. In addition to the Egg Hunt, there was face painting, crafts, games, concessions and tours throughout In-Sync Exotics where lions, tigers, cougars, servals, leopards, bobcats, lynx and a coatamundi could be seen. This fundraising event is held annually. The next event will be the Big Cat’s Birthday Party later this summer.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Murphy Marketplace It didn’t rain! The festivities celebrating the onset of Murphy Marketplace were dry as a chip and exciting in every way. Complete with a catered lunch held at the fire hall, the blessing and pledge lead by Mayor Bret Baldwin, good wishes extended by Collin County Commissioner Jerry Hoagland and Judge Keith Self combined with exciting details shared by City Manager Craig Sherwood and Murphy Marketplace Developer Eric Langford, Langford Property Company, the indoor portion of the ceremony went off without a hitch. With one exception--a fire call as Mr. Sherwood began to speak. Some would contend that the fire truck sirens actually were sounding for the 900 jobs that will be added in Murphy when Murphy Marketplace is completed and sales tax revenues increasing from $500,000 to over 3 million dollars per year. Mr. Langford gave a few hints as to the tenants moving into Murphy Marketplace:For more pictures and more about the stores coming to Murphy Marketplace, click "Full Story"

BRAVO! Garland Civic Theatre's "The Cover of Life" - Performances through March 31st

By Marcia JowersIt’s not often I see a play that causes me to have a more than temporary emotional reaction, let alone become so absorbed by each character, regardless of their role, that their plight and lives are contemplated long past the final curtain. True, I primarily enjoy attending musicals where I become more captivated by the clever choreography and musicality than the story line, but I’ve seen my share of the serious productions as well. While the “feel good” musicals are entertaining, I must tell you, "The Cover of Life" is a “feel more” production. Garland Civic Theatre’s “The Cover of Life” is based on a true story that makes the characters even more remarkable. The play was written by R. T. Robinson who wrote the play based on his father, two uncles, their wives, his grandmother, and two reporters, one from the Times Picayune and the other from Life Magazine. To read more about "The Cover Of Life", click "Full Story"

One of Texas’ most exciting retail centers will break ground on March 23, launching construction for a development that will be home to leading retail brands and will be a lifestyle destination for East Collin County. Covering 48 acres, Murphy Marketplace’s tenants will include such major national brands as Sprouts Farmers Market and more. The site has been popular with retailers because it is the major crossroads between Central Expressway on the west and Highway 78 on the east, and between Firewheel Mall to the south and Southfork Ranch/Allen Main Street to the north. The pending expansion of Murphy Road (FM 2551) to six lanes will further cement this intersection as the most important one in the sub-region. “We are thrilled to begin construction on Murphy Marketplace, a brand new and unique destination for Murphy and Collin County,” said Eric Langford, president of Langford Property Company, the owner and developer of the brand new center. “Our partnership with the City of Murphy has been a wonderful program of teamwork to attract such strong brands to a community that needs and will enjoy all the quality of life enhancements that Murphy Marketplace will bring.” For more renderings and information, click "Full Story"

Colleen Halbert who works for New Beginnings, an organization that provides help to domestic violence victims, recruited the Rolling Ridge teams with help from Jill Lambouses. There were no gutter balls for the “Pink Ladies” and “The Stingers” (named for the cocktail?) and “The King Pins” rolled for a great cause as well.

Since Eric immensely enjoys his big water tub, Vicky decided one way or another she would find a way to get Eric and his tiger friends their own swimming pool in the playground area. Thanks to an In-Sync fundraising effort, a very generous donation from an anonymous source and Mesa Pools of Wylie, you can almost hear the splashing and feel the spray of water from frolicking tigers.
Santa assembled his carolers and musicians in two brightly decorated trailers Sunday evening, and took to the streets in Rolling Ridge singing favorite Christmas carols. All RR home owners were invited to turn on their porch lights to indicate they would like the carolers to stop and sing at their house. The weather was pleasant (a little too warm for Santa who was dressed for caroling in the North Pole); the voices and trumpets melodious and the mood joyful for this wonderful neighborhood event.
Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under Arrest. Enforcement Blitz Continues this Holiday Season

[Murphy] – Drunk driving is one of America’s deadliest crimes. In fact, during 2005, nearly 13,000 people were killed in highway crashes involving an impaired driver or motorcycle operator with an illegal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. That is why the Murphy Police Department announced today that they will be out in full force looking for and cracking down on impaired drivers this holiday season. “The holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is one of the deadliest and most dangerous times of the year due to an increase in impaired driving,” said Chief Billy Myrick. “If we catch you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions. No excuses.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in December 2005, 1,033 people were killed in crashes involving a driver with an illegal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .08 or above. Driving with a BAC of .08 or higher is illegal in every state, but too many are still not getting the message. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, more than 1.3 million people were arrested for driving under the influence during 2005. “We will be out in force to get more drunk drivers off the road,” said Chief Myrick. “We want everyone to play it safe and always designate a sober driver or find a different way home if they have been out drinking.” Since 1981, every President of the United States has demonstrated the commitment to preventing impaired driving by proclaiming December as National Drunk & Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month. Chief Myrick said that always designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive drunk are just two of several simple steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for impaired driving. Other important tips include: • Plan ahead: Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate your sober driver before going out and give that person your keys; • If you’re impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely;• Promptly report drunk drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement;• Wearing your seat belt or using protective gear on your motorcycle is your best defense against an impaired driver;• And remember, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk. If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely. “Drunk driving is simply not worth the risk. It is deadly serious and against the law. If you drive drunk, you will be arrested. Violators will be spending their money on bail, court, lawyers and towing fees instead of buying holiday presents for loved ones. That’s not a great way to end the year,” said Chief Myrick. “So don’t take the chance. Remember, if you drive over the limit, you will be arrested.” For more information, visit www.StopImpairedDriving.org

Cold weather didn’t seem to be a factor for the hundreds of Murphy residents who turned out Saturday evening for the City’s annual tree lighting ceremony at City Hall. The well-planned event had something to offer everyone who attended. Outside, City Manager Craig Sherwood opened the evening’s festivities by welcoming residents to the city’s signature tree lighting. The Murphy Middle School orchestra, set up close to the huge Christmas tree, gave a superb performance of Christmas music in spite of cold fingers and instruments. The Murphy Middle School Choir also performed and warmed the crowd with their rich tones.Up the walkway to a warm and welcoming City Hall, Starbucks’ representatives dispensed complementary coffee and hot chocolate. Other stations along the walkway were manned by a variety of service organizations and of course the Murphy Messenger.
The music rises and, from a cloud of smoke at the top of a grand staircase, the ghostly apparition of Dame Agatha Christie emerges to greet the audience. We are invited to take a walk through her complex mind of plot twists and turns to meet The Unexpected Guest, her most critically acclaimed stage play of all time, which is currently performing at the Granville Arts Center in Garland. As the lights come up and the music swells, we are transported back in time to the lavish main hall of an antebellum estate. It’s 1938 Savannah, Georgia… a sultry summer evening, and we see the body of a man sitting in his wheelchair – a bullet through the head. Next to him stands a woman holding a gun, but is she truly the murderer? Please read on . . .Pictured are Renee Krapff as Laura Warwick & Michael Wiseman as Michael Starkwedder

MANOR HOUSE By Kimble McSweeney

We're in such desperate need of rain, and one can only venture an uncomfortable guess as to what the real summer weather may hold for us. And yet, everyone ventures forth to begin massive yard clean-ups, changing the plantings in the flower beds and giving the homefront a newly manicured and polished gleam!
