POSTAL SERVICE PRICES INCREASE MAY 11

Plano , TX – Postage will increase this Monday, and a First Class stamp will go from 42 to 44 cents. However, customers can continue to mail letters at today’s prices by purchasing the Forever Stamp before May 11. “The Forever Stamps were developed to help consumers ease the transition during price changes,” said Jack Weatherford, Plano Postmaster. “Forever Stamps do not have a denomination and will be honored whenever they are used with no need for additional postage for a one-ounce letter mailing. On May 11, the price of a Forever Stamp will be 44 cents.” Rising operational costs make the price adjustments necessary; the increase tracks the 2008 rate of inflation. “The Postal Service is not immune to rising costs which are affecting homes and businesses across Plano today,” Weatherford explained. “Even with the increases, the Postal Service continues to offer some of the lowest postage prices in the world.” For the average household, the First-Class Mail stamp price change will represent an additional $3 over the course of the year. When compared to annual increases in other household expenses, such as groceries, healthcare and utilities, the Postal Service continues to be an economical choice for shipping and mailing during tough economic times. For First-Class Mail, there will be no changes in the current additional ounce price, which remains at 17 cents. Other price changes on May 11 include: • A postcard increases a penny to 28 cents. • The first ounce of a large envelope (flat) increases 5 cents to 88 cents. • The first ounce of a parcel increases 5 cents to $1.22. • New First-Class Mail International postcard and letter (first ounce) prices are: • Canada – 75 cents • Mexico – 79 cents • Other countries – 98 cents # # #An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation – 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars.
Classic Gardens & Landscape and the Murphy Messenger will once again host a Pumpkin Decorating and Costume Contest with tours through the Haunted Greenhouses. This year’s event will be on Saturday, October 27th, 10 a.m. until 12 noon at Classic Gardens on FM 544 in Murphy next to Hobert Pools. You may buy your pumpkin in advance and save your receipt, or you may purchase your pumpkin the day of the decorating contest. Please bring your own carving and decorating supplies/materials with you on the 27th. Tables will be set up by 10 a.m. when carvers and decorators may begin demonstrating their creativity. Shelly Ferrell, Classic Gardens employee, is excited about the haunted greenhouses and is planning a few new surprises that visitors will find lurking among the plants and shrubs beginning at 11 a.m.! While the parade of costumes moves through the greenhouses, judges will be choosing winners by age group. Sonic Drive-In and Albertson’s will once again be an important part of the fun and excitement. There will be prizes and free candy, too. Plan to bring the family and join in the fun. The greenhouses are not super scary and of course the tours are done in daylight surroundings.

Mary Zumwalt Wins State Ms. Senior Pageant

Mary Zumwalt is going to Las Vegas in November to represent the state of Texas at the Ms. Senior America Pageant! Competing in Dallas on Saturday, August 11th, against 21 contestants from around the state, Mary walked away with the crown and honor of being named Ms. Senior Texas 2007. Contestants were judged on their philosophy of life, talent, evening gown presentation and their interviews with the judges. For the talent portion of the competition, Mary performed an original piano piece that she composed and arranged. Mary has been playing piano since the age of 3, both reading music and playing by ear, which she says is a truly God given gift. Mary uses her piano talents at Murphy Road Baptist Church, the Plano Senior Citizens Center and for her friends’ enjoyment. We wish Ms. Senior Texas 2007, Mary Zumwalt, the very best of luck when she represents Murphy and Texas in the National pageant. Mary is married to Jack Zumwalt and they are Murphy residents.

What in the heck is Geocaching??

The website: www.geocaching.com will give you a detailed explanation of this fun/educational – family/individual - recreation/hobby, but I learned about it first hand from Murphy resident, David Hawkins. When I asked David about his favorite pastime and sport, and yes, geocaching is considered a sport, he said, “If you like orienteering, a compass, being sneaky and scavenger hunts, you’ll like geocaching.” The website, mentioned above, defines geocaching as an entertaining adventure game for GPS (Global Positioning System) users. The term geocaching is formed from “geo,” the part that refers to geography, and “caching” the part that pertains to a “cache” or storage, and also means a place to hide things. That part of the game I thought might be easier until I saw how a “cache” is often disguised and hidden. “If it was a bear it could bite you,” comes to mind.
Bank Robbery Suspect Apprehended

Press Release # 2007-13For Immediate ReleaseJune 12, 2007 [Murphy] - On Monday, June 11, 2007 at 3:42 P.M., the Murphy Police Department was notified of a Bank Robbery which had just occurred at the Compass Bank located at 108 East F.M. 544, near the intersection of F.M. 544 and North Murphy Road, in Murphy, Texas. Police personnel responded to the scene and made contact with bank employees who reported that a White male, approximately 6’03, 220 lbs. wearing a blue plaid shirt, grey t-shirt, blue jeans and a tan colored safari hat entered the bank at approximately 3:40 P.M. and approached one of the tellers. Once at the counter, the suspect passed a note to the teller demanding that she hand over U.S. Currency. When the teller complied, the suspect left the location with an undisclosed amount of money and without further incident. At approximately 7:11 P.M. on Monday evening, Dallas Police officers were dispatched to an unknown disturbance in the 10400 block of Ferguson Road in Dallas. The reporting party had informed Dallas 9-1-1 Operators that they had observed a white male being thrown from a moving vehicle. Officers arrived on scene to find an intoxicated individual, later identified as Joshua Ash Toler a 36 year old white male, being treated for apparent injuries by Dallas Fire personnel. Toler reportedly commented to DFD and DPD personnel that he had robbed a bank in Murphy earlier in the day. DPD officers then made contact with the FBI in Dallas and Detectives from the Murphy Police Department to confirm that information. Toler was subsequently taken into custody and later transported to the Emergency Room at Medical City Dallas for additional treatment to injuries observed by those on scene. Toler remained at that location until treatment was completed. An arrest warrant was issued, charging Joshua Ash Toler with the offense of Robbery, a Felony 2nd Degree. Toler was released to the custody of Murphy Police officers at approximately 2:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 12, 2007 and transported to the Collin County Jail where he was booked on the robbery charge. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate this case in conjunction with Detectives from this agency.

Destination: Most Unusual - Independence Pass - Continental DivideWhere were you? The photo was taken on June 2 as we drove back to Texas from Aspen, Colorado. Independence Pass is one of the most dangerous roads in America. At points it is one lane with steep cliffs on one side, and sheer dropoffs on the other. (10 mph only!) The road had only been open for about a week since it takes a while to clear away snow, rocks, and tree debris from the Winter storms. It was about 45 degrees when the photo was taken and much colder with the wind! It is amazing what a change in altitude can do to the temperature!
Five Cougars and a Tiger Rescued by In-Sync Exotics

Vicky Keahey, Founder and President of In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center, has returned to Wylie with six (6) exotic cats from a breeding facility in Athens, TX. Over the past three years the couple who owned and operated the Athens facility had made several inquiries to In-Sync Exotics to take over the care and responsibility for their exotic cats. The owners wanted to pursue other interests and were trying to re-locate their animals. In-Sync Exotics did accept one leopard, Java, back in 2004 but was not able to accommodate additional exotics at that time. When the Athens couple called again this month to report that their house had burned to the ground (located on the grounds of the facility), and that they could no longer care for their remaining cats, In-Sync Exotics agreed to accept their five (5) cougars and one (1) tiger. The initial plan was to transport the one cougar with claws and the tiger to a New Jersey rescue where that facility would find a long-term placement for them. Unfortunately the New Jersey rescue was not successful in locating a home for the two exotic felines and now In-Sync Exotics is left with responsibility and expense to care for all six unexpected additions. To read more click on "Full Story"

Scott Bradley, candidate for Place 4, was unable to attend due to a business trip out of state.
Chance Cranford was named after Chance McKenzie, a character played by Sam Elliott in the 1983-84 television series, The Yellow Rose. He’s not a rancher, far from it, but he does possess the rugged determination of one. Prior to September 6, 1997, Chance was an active boy who loved athletics. A freshman at Tom Bean High School, he was an “A” student and played quarterback in football and point guard in basketball. Chance was fourteen years old with unlimited opportunities on the horizon when he was injured in a hunting accident. Chance woke up three weeks later in Parkland Hospital with most of his face gone, including his sight. For two years he couldn’t put anything in his mouth, no water, no food—nothing. He was fed through tubes. But his attitude was good, and he attributes his miraculous rehabilitation to his wonderful mom, dad, family and friends. In spite of his new challenges he never lost his self confidence. To read more about Chance, click "Full Story"

It was a little too late in the day for the Easter Bunny to be darting out into the street to cause this accident, but about 4 p.m., 1/2 block down from Mustang Park, the driver of the pictured vehicle (lady in blue shirt next to policeman), failed to follow the curve in the road and hit the curb and then a mail box. According to Abbey and Mike Dawson, who kindly emailed the Messenger these photos, there were no injuries. The driver was visiting friends/family only 1/4 mile down the road. Photos by Abbey and Mike Dawson of Murphy.

Cars Lined up at the Pumps to Take Advantage of Gas Buy Down - 25 cents off per gallon compliments of the Springs Church

The pumps opened at 11 a.m. for the Gas Buy Down sponsored by the Springs Church, a new Murphy church led by Pastor Joel Halprin. The pastor and members were easily identifiable in their red shirts as they greeted drivers, directed traffic, held signage roadside and assisted customers at the pumps. All the while with a smile on their faces. The Exxon store manager changed the prices on the marquee to reflect the 25 cents off per gallon. Instead of paying $2.40 per gallon for regular gas, those who came early only had to pay $2.15 – The Springs paid the remaining 25 cents per gallon. All three grades of gas were discounted until a total of 4000 gallons of gas had been pumped. It was no surprise that the line to the pumps often extended into the McDonald’s parking lot but everyone remained congenial and didn’t seem to mind the wait. What a great way for a new church to make friends in a community--fast! The Springs meets at Boggess Elementary School, 225 Glen Ridge Drive.

If you would have asked In-Sync’s founder and President, Vicky Keahey, Friday night if she thought the Egg Hunt might end up as an aquatics event, she probably would have taken that bet. But all turned out well on Saturday when the rain moved on and sun came out. In addition to the Egg Hunt, there was face painting, crafts, games, concessions and tours throughout In-Sync Exotics where lions, tigers, cougars, servals, leopards, bobcats, lynx and a coatamundi could be seen. This fundraising event is held annually. The next event will be the Big Cat’s Birthday Party later this summer.

The Springs Church Pumped-Up for Gas Buy-Down

If you’ve been praying for lower gas prices, Pastor Joel Halprin and his congregation are answering! The Springs Church, a new Murphy church that meets at Boggess Elementary, is pumped up about contributing 25 cents on the gallon toward your fill-up on Saturday, March 31st at the Murphy Exxon Station beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Halprin said, “The gas buy down is simply a way for our new church to show Murphy that we love them. We really just want to do something for the community with no strings attached. We want people to know we are a practical church that offers practical answers, and what better way to show that than to meet a need that affects us all. Gas prices are rising again, so we thought that this would be a small way to show people that we really care in a practical way.”To read more about Saturday's Gas Buy Down, click on "Full Story"

To Russia (and back) With Love - Mission Ivanovo Launched

You may recall an earlier story in the Messenger about Murphy resident Jennifer Davis who was organizing a mission trip to Russia to provide assistance to several orphanages in Ivanovo. One of the orphanages she was to visit was the one she and her husband Randal adopted two of their children from. Jennifer is back in Murphy with an incredible story. Jennifer, Kerri Fishencord, Chad and Dani Womack, all from First Baptist Church in Wylie, left DFW airport on January17th and arrived in Moscow, via Zurik, 18 hours later. After a 5 hour van ride to Ivanovo, they met with the Ivanovo Department of Education and government officials. With the aid of a translator, a 23 year old English Professor at the University of Ivanovo, official documents were secured for the Americans to visit two orphanages. One of the criteria for being granted access is if the result will somehow be beneficial to the Russian government. In this case, purchasing supplies and medicines for Russian children was deemed beneficial and the group’s status was raised from “tourist” to full and complete access for this trip and future trips. To learn how you can help Jennifer and Mission Ivanovo, click "full story."

Murphy Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Celebration - Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market Named Business of the Year

Each January the Murphy Chamber steps away from its usual luncheon/guest speaker program to honor a Chamber Board Member; a Chamber Ambassador and a Chamber Business of the Year. It is also the time when new officers and board members assume new responsibilities and duties. This year’s luncheon took on an Italian theme with both decorations and food. Members enjoyed three pasta dishes, salad, bread sticks and cheese cake around centerpieces of candles, greenery and bottles of sparkling beverages that were later given as prizes to those lucky enough to have the winning ticket numbers.Lonnie Long, outgoing Chamber Chairman, presented a pictorial review of the functions and events of 2006. Then it was time to announce and recognize three people for their Chamber accomplishments.Lonnie Long presented a plaque and pink roses to Ambassador of the Year, Sammie Hampton. This is Sammie’s second year to win this award. Next was Board Member of the Year. Jon Lashbrook, incoming Chamber Chairman, made the announcement and plaque presentation to winner, Lonnie Long. Lonnie has served as Chamber Chairman for the past two years. Police Chief Billy Myrick and Fire Chief Kelley Stalder gave a preface to the announcement of the Business of the Year award, presented by City Manager Craig Sherwood. The Chiefs stated that this business has always been helpful and generous with their donations to both departments and to the City. The business has also financially supported the Chamber Scholarship Fund. Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market is this year’s Business of the Year. Well deserved, Store Manger, Ricky Tipton!
Mission Ivanovo Fundraising Coffee a Success

Jennifer Davis is counting the days before she leaves Murphy for her 7-day mission trip to Russia and the orphanage her two children were adopted from several years ago. Several months ago Jennifer and Randal received a letter telling of the sad conditions at the Shuya Home orphanage and also at two other orphanages nearby. All of the orphanages are in great need of help but sadly there are no charitable organizations providing assistance. Jennifer established “Mission Ivanovo” through First Baptist Church in Wylie to begin a ministry to give back to the Russian community and to the children. To help fund the mission trip to Russia, a fundraising coffee with silent auction was held at the church on January 5th, that raised $1800. And, as a result of the Messenger’s initial article in December about Jennifer’s humanitarian efforts, two anonymous donations were received from Murphy residents for which Jennifer and Randal Davis are most grateful. When Jennifer returns from Ivanovo at the end of January, she will share her experiences and photos with us in a follow-up story in the Messenger.

A Common Cause for Itchy Ears: Ear Mites

By Michael Lamping, DVMMurphy Road Animal Hospital Veterinary examination of new pets, especially puppies and kittens, from pet stores, breeders, and pet adoption facilities is encouraged shortly after you acquire them. This prevents you from accidentally bringing home parasites such as mites, fleas, ticks, ringworm, and intestinal worms which could be spread to other pets or to people. One example of a very common external parasite is ear mites. The veterinarians at Murphy Road Animal Hospital diagnosed ear mites on 40 patients in 2006. These patients included cats, dogs, ferrets, and rabbits. Especially common in cats, Otodectes cynotis infestations are spread by direct physical contact between animals and frequently affect all susceptible animals in a household or colony. Rabbits are vulnerable to a related mite, Psoroptes cuniculi. To read more about this condition, click "Full Story"

Terri (Teresita) Callahan to Take the Oath of U.S. Citizenship

If you shop at Walgreen’s on FM 544 and N. Murphy Road, no doubt you recognize Terri Callahan in the picture. Terri has worked in the Murphy store for six years where she is currently the Cosmetics Department Supervisor. Terri was born in Manila, Philippines. She lived and worked in both Hong Kong and Sidney, Australia before coming to the United States. And what brought her to Texas? Or should we say: Who brought her to Texas? It was in fact a long distance romance and ultimate marriage 9 years ago to Rondey Callahan, Murphy Exchange Club President- Elect. Terri spent many days studying for her U.S. Citizenship test, which she passed successfully, and completing the piles of required paperwork. Terri was widowed in 1981 so after she and Rondey married, Terri’s son and a daughter from her first marriage also came to the U.S. To make Terri’s swearing-in ceremony even more special, on January 9th in Arlington, Terri and her son will take the oath of U.S. citizenship together. During Terri’s time at Walgreen’s she has been instrumental in several arrests made by the Murphy Police Department. Once when she was working at the pharmacy drive-thru window she was asked to detain (or “entertain” as Terri calls it) a prescription fraud criminal until the police could arrive and make the arrest. Another time it was her keen instinct at the cash register that alerted police to a credit card and I.D. fraud ring operating in the area. All three of the arrested and convicted individuals are currently serving lengthy sentences in prison.Terri Callahan: Crime fighter and soon to be U.S. Citizen. Welcome to the United States of America, Terri!

Since Eric immensely enjoys his big water tub, Vicky decided one way or another she would find a way to get Eric and his tiger friends their own swimming pool in the playground area. Thanks to an In-Sync fundraising effort, a very generous donation from an anonymous source and Mesa Pools of Wylie, you can almost hear the splashing and feel the spray of water from frolicking tigers.
Santa assembled his carolers and musicians in two brightly decorated trailers Sunday evening, and took to the streets in Rolling Ridge singing favorite Christmas carols. All RR home owners were invited to turn on their porch lights to indicate they would like the carolers to stop and sing at their house. The weather was pleasant (a little too warm for Santa who was dressed for caroling in the North Pole); the voices and trumpets melodious and the mood joyful for this wonderful neighborhood event.
Cold weather didn’t seem to be a factor for the hundreds of Murphy residents who turned out Saturday evening for the City’s annual tree lighting ceremony at City Hall. The well-planned event had something to offer everyone who attended. Outside, City Manager Craig Sherwood opened the evening’s festivities by welcoming residents to the city’s signature tree lighting. The Murphy Middle School orchestra, set up close to the huge Christmas tree, gave a superb performance of Christmas music in spite of cold fingers and instruments. The Murphy Middle School Choir also performed and warmed the crowd with their rich tones.Up the walkway to a warm and welcoming City Hall, Starbucks’ representatives dispensed complementary coffee and hot chocolate. Other stations along the walkway were manned by a variety of service organizations and of course the Murphy Messenger.
On Saturday in front of the City Complex, a group of Murphy residents supporting the recall of Mayor Bret Baldwin collected signatures on a recall petition. According to Rolling Ridge resident Michael Jones, today was the “soft” opening of the recall movement. Plans are to continue acquiring petition signatures on Monday evening at the 7:30 p.m. City Council meeting.Brad Lapsley notified the Messenger Friday night that he had been approached earlier in the evening at his home in Willow Wood during a canvas in his neighborhood for recall signatures. This is the second Mayor in a row to be subject to recall. We are invited to take a walk through her complex mind of plot twists and turns to meet The Unexpected Guest, her most critically acclaimed stage play of all time, which is currently performing at the Granville Arts Center in Garland.

Drainage issues have caused the new sidewalk in front of the One Murphy Village stores to be dug up and reformed to be poured at a lower height. According to the manager of #1 Pro Nails, the sidewalk was poured too high and runoff water from recent rains was entering stores. Mud from the digging and on-going rain showers made board planks placed across the dug out area a little tricky for some customers to negotiate.
